Lobbying for GERG to stay?

Submitted by myantoniobass … on

Ok, Mgobloggers, the big win today got me thinking about our future.  Help me out.  So I neither have called for GERG’s job (unlike Brian, Dr. Saturday, etc.) nor would I be terribly sad if RR is fired.  I’m a moderate.  Still, I enjoyed today’s performance, and hope RR wins more this year and returns next year (wins are great for M).

What will it take for you to lobby for GERG?  Everyone concedes the D is young.  Demens, Vinopal, Avery, and C. Gordon all showed improvement today.  Last year the D ended strong against O-state.  If these young guys continue to improve, why not give GERG the benefit of the doubt much like RR?

I suppose you could point to the wide open wheel routes (2x) today as lack of coaching.  But I saw adjustments today with 4 DL, Roh (finally) moved to a position of strength, and varied blitzes/rushes.

If RR gets a pass for 3 years of poor D, why not give GERG?  I can’t say RR must be fired, and I can’t say GERG must be either based on injuries and more (eg. see B. Graham’s comments).

I would keep GERG, the 3-3-5 debacle at PSU was clearly the WVU-crew intervening.  Now I think Tony Gibson's job security should be more of a debate.  When GERG has been able to run his own hybrid system (Iowa, ND), the defense looks better.  I think GERG needs to get more of his guys in place, so all of the defensive staff is on the same page.

Overall I think our defense was not THAT bad - the offense had 5 turnovers, putting the D in some very bad spots, I would say 14-17 points were the offense putting us in bad position.

Now if we dump the defensive staff and pull in the coaches from TCU or other top place, I would not protest.

I debated including, "this post is about the future, while also including some thoughts from today."

The whole "can't we only write about how we're enjoying the win, anything else is lame" stuff is, well, lame.  I'm really glad you and others have an artificial rule preventing any future discussion on this team today.  Celebrate away!  Hope you enjoyed it and didn't break your rule by discussing next week, last week, tomorrow, or next year.

Does anyone else feel like this is kind of a witch hunt.  Does our defense suck incredibly?  Yes.  Is it potentially the worst defense Michigan has had in recent memory -- probably.  But how often has Michigan had 7 freshman starters -- Never.  As much as I would love to heap all of the blame on GERG...I just don't think even the most spectacular DC in the world could fix this D.  And furthermore, throwing on the pressure of working under a new DC next year might just throw the defense into another rebuilding year...which is not what we need.

The decision will be made by RR and DB, no matter what anyone says or doesn't say.  RR has shown himself to have incredibly thick skin from the pretty much nonstop crap he has taken the last three years.  DB is used to being THE MAN when it comes to decisions, and has probably pissed off a lot of people over the years with his.  If either of them listened to us, they wouldn't have been good enough to get hired at Michigan in the first place.

I don't think anyone here, no matter how insightful he may be, will have even a microscopic amount of sway when it comes to the decisions that will be made this offseason.

I hold no ill will to GERG, but when you barely win a game scoring 67 points, someone's head needs to roll.  Plus, it's not like player development has been supremely inspiring, and frankly I'd rather have a younger DC in house who won't carry the baggage of presiding over the two worst defenses in UM's modern. history everywhere he goes.

If he needed to go last week, he needs to go this  week.  We  were one play from losing another game with a great offensive performance.  It feels good to win, but we need to see things as they really are, and our D is not pretty.  I don't know if RichRod is calling the shots on D or GERG re the three man front, but it sure as shit ain't working.

I know the defense made improvements but your giving GERG too much credit. Ealier in the week it sounded like Roh went to the coaches and pushed them to get moved back to d-line forcing some of the changes we saw in the front 7.

I want to enjoy this win before bitching, but no. Damn am I sure glad we got the 6th win finally, but giving up 65 points is incredible (most given up in school history...). I don't care who we have on defense, there's no way we give up that much with say the dc from almost anywhere else. it is most definitely not all the players.

What amazes me is that Illinois's defense was actually pretty good going into this unlike ours and we put up 67. Damn...

I dont think GERG is the sole problem. Its a lot of things rolled into one. We need to fire all the defensive coaches and bring in a Defensive coach that can recruit big time talent and develop are youngsters on D into a good defense. Something along the lines of what are opponent today did this year.. I wouldnt mind bring in someone along the lines of Bumpas or even Casteel both good quality DC in the country!
