Seriously, how can Navy compete?

Submitted by BlueUPer on

Maybe I am missing something, but in this day and age, how are the military academies able to compete with the so called big time programs?  On a recruiting basis, there really is no comparing ND or PItt to Navy or Air Force!  But when they get on the field, espicially of late, Navy and AF can play with most teams.  What allows them to to play at such a high level?  Is it elite coaching?  Intelligent players?  The systems they use?  In basketball, teams lacking overall athleticism rely on systems like Princeton or Penn.  You see many of the academies relying heavily on option football.  Thoughts?

You sir have my respect.

I looked at the Navy academy during my Jr year of HS.  Several friends of the family were graduates and were pushing me hard.  I decided against pursuing that because it is definetly an "all in" mentality and this guy as a 16/17yo was not ready to make that commitment.  Not to mention that I would have had a hard time meeting all of the extra entrance requirements.

Does anyone remember the Dee Dowis years?  He actually got a lot of Heisman votes one year, more than Emmitt Smith.  The year after he left, they beat Ohio St. in the Liberty Bowl.  So they've been doing this for awhile.  There's a reason ND doesn't play them anymore.
