Stoppage Muppets
It takes some doing to unearth muppets in June but here they are:
And you can't have one without the other…
That was horrible, as if Ryan Miller was actually Algeria and FIFA and the universe and God. And then the ball was just lying there, waiting to be pushed in one direction or the other.
I can finally breathe again.
Absolutely tremendous finish. No words.
Peace
Ty
Within 5 minutes of being stunned with happiness I thought "Please, Brian, grace us with muppets." And he delivered.
What a breathtaking game...and two weeks ago, I never thought I'd say that about a soccer match. Well done, Team USA - you've converted me (at least once every four years for the World Cup, that is).
That's how it starts.
Extremely satisfying, in a "now I don't have to be more depressed than usual for four years" kind of way.
Wow, that should have been about a 5-0 win for the US. Can't believe we missed that many shots.
All's Well That Ends Well.
because it would really suck to be out of the Cup and dwelling on disallowed goals ... although in this match that would be the wrong focus. Yeah, they blew two big calls, at least from what I could see (the disallowed goal and Altidore's "hand ball" in the box), but like you said, we had a number of chances that simply should have been buried.
It would have been interesting to see how Slovenia would have played if we'd have gone up early 1-0. I guess we'll never know.
Is it bad that I'm rooting for the Socceroos now?
My one year old daughter dove onto the floor imitating the pile-up on Donovan. Of course, so did I.
I'm assuming you were watching in a bar. How did the reaction there compare with Ireland-Germany 2002?
I think the US has a realistic shot at the semi-final. Ghana/Serbia (possibly Germany) in the second round and South Korea/Uruguay in the third will make for an interesting few weeks.
Great things happen to those who work hard.
I was watching from a treadmill at my gym, at when we scored, I started yelling and cheering and ended up startling and upsetting a bunch of people in the middle of their sets/routines. Hopefully nobody dropped a weight on their foot..
(i did too)
"The harder I work, the luckier I get." Keep rolling Donovan and Co.
HFS, that was a great game. I'm on vacation this week. My car is in the shop. A neighbor is a life-long US soccer fan. I've followed the last 2 World Cups via radio/this year TiVo. I watched this at the neighbor's and everyone heard us screaming. I love sports.
And now, the pool before the afternoon games. Don't swim, lotta beers so far...
1. Great outcome; awesome to see Landon Donovan slide along the pitch after the goal.
2. FIFA World Cup Soccer is sort of hard to take seriously, when you see good goals waved off with no basis in fact, replay, explanation or consequences. It's all the more ridiculous given how few goals are scored. It's like waving off a grand slam in the world series because A-Rod's cap was on crooked.
3. But the BEST is the implosion of the Frenchies! Nothing beats the combination of arrogance, incompetence, poor sportsmanship and barely concealed racism. Or as Groundskeeper Willie said:
I am a little speechless still, but how about we talk about the bad history the Yanks broke today:
The broke an 8-game winless streak against non CONCACAF teams in the World Cup
It was only the second win since their return to the Wolrd Cup in 1990 against a non CONCACAF team
It was the first time ever the Americans earned even a point in the third leg of a group stage at the World Cup.
It was the third time the Americans have ever won their group in World Cup play
Its only the second World Cup in the last 60 years where the Americans won a game.
They got past a ton of history today and are in a winnable, yet very even quad of the Knockout Round. Here's hoping another big win comes Saturday to further fuzzy the team photo of greatest moment of modern US National Team history.
*3rd win, *3rd world cup
World Cup 1994: US 2 Colombia 1
World Cup 2002: US 3 Portugal 2
World Cup 2010: US 1 Algeria 0
