How much does luck play into our QB situation?

Submitted by MGoStrength on

I know there are lots of things we are struggling with on offense.  The WRs are young, the RBs are inconsistent, the RT is a disaster.  However, it seems like despite all those things, if we just had a slightly above average QB, we’d be undefeated and on our way to a 9-10 win season.  Instead, every game looks dicey.  So, my question is how much does luck play into getting a good QB?

Obviously Harbaugh can coach QBs.  He came in with not much to work with.  Morris didn’t pan out.  He turned Ruddock’s career around.  He got a number of high quality games from a middling recruit in Speight.  Speight has obviously struggled at times.  O’Korn had one good game, but it seems like we’re going to struggle to win with him. Peters doesn’t seem ready yet based on the fact that he’s not getting a chance.  How much of that is luck?  Harbaugh’s only guy is Peters and he seems behind where we expected.  Why?

Out of the top #15 teams’ starting QBs, only Stidham at Auburn was a higher ranked recruit than Peters.  Peters is higher ranked than JT Barrett, Trace McSorley, Kelly Bryant, Jalen Hurts, Jake Browning, Malik Rosier, Baker Mayfield, Sam Darnold, and Jake Fromm to name a few.  Most are older than Peters, but many played in their second year in their programs.  Maybe the common theme is many are dual threat QBs?  Maybe dual threat QBs have a shorter learning curve.  It seems like Florida has experienced the same problem.

So, how much of this is luck?  Are we just behind the times with a pro style system?  Is it too early to say there might be an issue with Peters if he doesn’t get a chance in the next few games?

Honestly even with a good QB I don't know how good our offense would be. Our WRs can't get open and even though they're young, when they get open they can't catch the ball (except for perry)

Honestly.... I think we're in a holding pattern, HB wants improvement from OK and the OF of line but you can't put BP in the game because it gives the team the sense of panick and you have PN ST next week, If we beat IN handly today give him mopp up duty, but the key to BP future will be the PN ST game...If Mich wins BP's will still seat, But if we loose his chances of playing are right around the corner....ie The Rutgers game.

I think the only situation where luck applies is the Speight injury.  Sitting on his arse, play is over, and a helmet to helmet shot from behind?  Bad luck.  Other than that, all the offensive woes are self-inlficted ultimately stemming from bad OL play.  No time for
QB, no time for routes to develop, no holes for RBs.  Then, when the OL does pass protect, QBs miss throws.  When QBs make their throws, receivers drop the ball.  When the OL opens holes in the running game, RBs miss the reads/cuts.  I guess there has also been some misfortune in the recruiting and injury aspects in the recent past, outside of game play this season.  I think we need to man up, look in the mirror, and blame that guy for our problems.

I do think being a dual threat is a huge advantage for a young QB. When things go bad they can scramble, and if they're good enough at scrambling the D's going to have to spy, taking away someone in pass coverage. I wish we ran a power spread, similar to Urban with Hyde a few years back.

We all know about Newsome, but no one has mentioned LTT who got kicked off the team.  My hunch is if Newsome was our LT, LTT was our RT, and Cole was our center (Bredeson & Onwenu are guards), we'd be faring quite a bit better up front.  Keep Black healthy and we're probably faring a little better.  Maybe Speight would have looked a little better and not gotten injured with a cleaner pocket and a better running game.

I know that's a lot of if's, but losing both projected starters at tackle, forcing Cole to move over, and accumulating 3 new starters on o-line is difficult to overcome and retain cohesion.
