OT: Who are the best rock vocalists?

Submitted by wolverine1987 on

Here is my incomplete list. As I'm a child of the 80's and 90's it is weighted that way. I'm sure there are more that you guys will advocate for.

Chris Cornell (Soundgarden. Audioslave, Solo)

Thom Yorke (Radiohead)

Brad Delp (Boston)

Steve Perry (Journey)

EDiT: Sorry hit enter before done, more complete list continues

Robert Plant (Led Zepplin)

Van Morrison

Freddie Mercury (Queen)

Bono (U2)

Have at it. Who else belongs here?

As cheesy has his image ultimately became, Axl as a singer really was something else in his day.  I've always enjoyed Freddie Mercury and appreciate the commentary on him throughout this post, but Axl's range obliterated Freddie's. That may seem counterintuitive relative to Freddie's persona as a singer, but it is a fact, not an opinion.  Axl had him by a full octave greater on the low end, plus half an octave greater on the high end.

That doesn't make Axl the "best" vocalist ... but his vocal ability as a rock musician was really incredible.

Best vocalist doesn't necessarily mean best frontman. Plant, axel, Roth, hetfeild doesn't have great vocals but helluva frontmen.

Best is mercury but that dude from mudvayne can fucking sing

For the older crowd, Mark Farner of Grand Funk Railroad in their early years.  Possibly the best garage band ever.

I also liked Steve Walsh from Kansas.  Masque and Leftoverture are 2 of my favorite albums.

I will say Thom Yorke has gone way downhill.. Ive seen a couple recent Radiohead shows and they were just so, so bad.

Todd Park Mohr has an incredible voice. This song gets me every time. Probably because I associate it with my dad - Ann Arbor Grandfather. Do yourself a favor and click the link if you've never heard it before.

P.S. and after that, check out "Love Betsy" from the same album. Incredible stuff. And of course, there is their breakthrough album, Sister Sweetly. I'm amazed they haven't received more love and critical acclaim. I can listen to their stuff all day long, day after day.

And because I can't have one without the other:

I'll list:

Todd Park Mohr, Morrissey, Chris  Isaak, Suzuka Nakamoto (Su-Metal from Babymetal,) Peter Garrett (Midnight Oil,) Bruce Dickinson, Nash Kato (Urge Overkill,) Bill Janovitz (Buffalo Tom,) Johnny Cash, and Mark David Hollis (Talk Talk.)

That's in addition to several already named vocalists - Plant, Dylan, etc.
