Big changes atop all-time wins, pct list with ND academic scandal

Submitted by Wolverine Devotee on

Finally found time to do new calculations.

ND has plummeted in both the all-time win percentage and all-time wins list. I doubt they'll ever be in second place ever again after this.

Yes, the games happened on the field. But that still doesn't matter in these statistics.

They should've just played school

I will be shocked if Notre Dame doesnt win it's appeal.

Thank you for generating new stats, but these stats will have a relatively short shelf-life.  Damn shame.  ND is a bunch of cheaters!

I note with pleasure that Notre Dame will almost certainly drop from tied for 5th to 6th place in total wins when all is said and done this  season.

I am not at all confident that the vacated records will stick upon ND's appeal.  ND's initial response to the sanction actually sounded pretty good to me, better than similar statements by other schools in other situations... (1) this was a situation of a student on the very fringe of the school's football officialdom helping out players in a few isolated incidents, and once officialdom found out about it they shut it down and did everything right to report, cooperate, etc.; and (2) according to ND at least, there's no precedent for vacated record in that kind of situation.

If (2) is indeed true, I'd bet vacating of wins doesn't stick.  This wasn't like OSU systematically turning a blind eye to tattoo-gate and then Tressel trying to cover it up.

In the lead-up to ND's game against Duke earlier in the year, I wrote a diary (link) about the historical race between U-M and ND for all-time wins and winning percentage.  I'd hate to see that historical relationship now made moot for something like this; I'd much prefer to see U-M now maintain and widen its advantage through domination on the field.

And I LOVE the idea of ND simply being the #2 also-ran to U-M.

I think your numbers are off a bit. Notre Dame's current record, before vacating the wins from 2012 and 2013, is 896–321–42. Taking away Notre Dame's 21 wins from 2012 and 2013 puts them at 875-321-42 (.724). I don't know where you are getting the extra win and three extra losses.

With or without those wins, ND's been on the decline for some time and should continue to slide down the % winning list.  Their last dominant decade was the 1970's and they've been slightly better than average since.  Here's the winning % by decade from the 1970's thru last season.

School 1970's 1980's 1990's 2000's 2010 - 2015
Michigan 0.848 0.750 0.775 0.653 0.623
Notre Dame 0.805 0.658 0.702 0.574 0.705**
OSU 0.811 0.697 0.746 0.803 0.824*
Alabama 0.863 0.723 0.675 0.547* 0.878

OSU's been consistently good for some time now and show no sign of slowing down.  Alabama vacated 21 victories from the 2000's that's dragged down their overall percentage but they've been destroying college football since Saban's second year.  I just don't see ND being able to keep pace.

Michigan still has a nice cushion but the past 10 - 15 years haven't helped.  Harbaugh could not have arrived at a better time.

*wins vacated

**does not account for ND's recently vacated wins, my source was NCAA's stats going into this season.

Michigan vs. Ohio State head to head. Currently at 58-49-6. They have made up a lot of ground since 2001 going 13-2 against us. Hopefully JH can at least break even during his tenure to keep them in our rear view mirror where they belong.

This, of course, would also help our overall position in wins and percentage going forward.
