How Much Fandom (Gear) Is Too Much Fandom?

Submitted by MaizeMN on

The other day I had to take our new Morkie pup, Cujo (I wanted to name him Hairbaugh) to the veterinerian. While there, the vet noticed my MICHIGAN survival bracelet and asked if I was a fan. I replied that I was an alumnus, Class of '88, and followed with the obligatory GO BLUE!

On my way back to the office, I realized that not only was I wearing a MICHIGAN bracelet, but also a UM watch, '95 throwback Fab Five Nikes and carrying a Michigan wallet. I'm originally from Traverse City, but currently live in MN, so there isn't an abundance of UM fans here. (mostly Gopher and Badger folk) So...

How much gear is too much gear?

Do those of you that live outside Michigan tend to wear more, less, or the same amount of branded clothing as when you were a student or resident?

What is the perception/reaction in other places to your Michigan attire?

Edit: Changed thread title to clarify

If not trying to dress nice, I wear my M hat pretty much everywhere. I live in Houston now, and hear Go Blue all the time. Every time I travel someone will say it, even when I went to Belize. Hearing Go Blue from a total stranger will always bring a smile to my face.

I think it depends on whether your attire is "appropriate" for your context or not. There's a fair amount of time where I have to look reasonably professional, even if I'm wearing jeans. I won't be decked out in Michigan stuff then. But if it's casual wear, people wear team or regional stuff all the time. Mine tends to be Michigan stuff. If I need to wear a hoodie, it's a Michigan one. Working on the yard? Old Michigan stuff. I don't think living in Minnesota has made much of a difference to me.

Wore my #eating hoodie and then a Michigan football t-shirt underneath it today at the Special Olympics.  Pretty sure every picture of me on social media (other than a formal event, and even then, I'm probably wearing a U-M tie) has me in Michigan gear.

How much creme brulee is too much? I'll tell ya! The amount I had last night. I may need a sombrero to celebrate the endless supply of hopscotch.

I have a few hats, shirts, sweatshirts, etc. But I always try to check myself before I leave the house to make sure that I'm not doubling up. One piece of Michigan themed apparel at a time is plenty. I'm in my 30s, after all. Years ago, I bought a pair of maize and blue Crocs flip-flops with a split M logo at the Westgate TJ Maxx because they were super cheap and I had a need. But I had to take some sandpaper to the M and make it disappear. That logo was tacky as hell and it was somewhat embarrassing to wear them, especially if I failed to realize that I was also wearing a Michigan shirt. The U of M should be above slapping their logo on every conceivable product just to make a few extra bucks. Now they're just a cool pair of maize and blue flip-flops, and I can wear them with a Michigan shirt.

Like most people I owned a lot of stuff from undergrad like the annual football shirts, 2 replica jerseys, M sweatpants, and Maize Rage shirts that I wore pretty much everyday as a student, but no longer. Funny you guys commented on how you'd get pissed and throw things around during games, I used to be extremely superstitious and if we were losing, I had to change my entire wardrobe. For the 2007 Rose Bowl against USC I think I changed 4 times. Needless to say, no combination of M gear helped us win that game.

Within the last 5 years or so, they started making women's apparel that wasn't an idiotic pink or baby blue with cap sleeves, so I bought a bunch of new stuff and the fit and variety makes wearing Michigan gear much more "trendy" and well put together. In general, though, I still don't wear sports apparel as often as I did when I was younger. I currently live in the south for grad school and love hearing a "Go Blue!" when I'm out wearing a M shirt. And it happens more than I expected. Makes me feel at home!

While visiting a friend in Lima a bit ago, it was very surprising how many times I heard passersby say ¡Vamos Azul! if I had an M shirt on.

The best part though was the fact that my friend there was an Ohio State grad, and from the one instance I can recall her wearing something OSU related, she got nothing.

I'm from Ohio. I graduated from Youngstown State. I've been to far more many Michigan games than Penguin games.

Being that I am from the heart of buckeye territory, I wear my Michigan gear sparingly, as to avoid confrontation.

I do not take kindly to shit talking.

Same here. Literally only me and two other kids are Michigan fans at my school. The week of "The game" my principle makes everyone get in the gym on Friday, and all the Buckeye fans he has stand on one end, all the Michigan fans on the other. It's like watching Leonidas from 300 fighting the Persians: a little fighting a lot.

Live out of state. Have dozens of t-shirts, shorts, jorts, jerseys, hats. Wear them whenever I'm not in the office. My favorite is my 1997 National Championship football t-shirt that is barely holding together and badly eroding in the arm pits. Bought it right after we won. I plan to be buried in it. Since graduating I spend more than ever on gear. My 3 little girls wear UM jerseys every Friday to school during the fall. Needless to say they are the only kids in Seattle wearing UM gear to school. They think it's awesome. I have them thoroughly brainwashed. They all plan to go to UM. Hope out of state tuition doesn't increase in the next 8-14 years. The 2020 opener against the Huskies will be a week long family event.

Used to have a bunch of stuff, then my friends (who isn't a bi sports guy) asked me how much Michigan gear I have? When he said that, and the fact we're signed by adidas, has made me not get anything Michigan till Jordan stuff can be sold. I will buy a crap ton of Jordan gear, but basically I've been wearing the same Michigan shirt that fits, and isn't adidas, for 2 years now.

There can never be too much fan gear. You need layers of Maize and Blue. I recommend a Michigan tshirt, with a Michigan sweatshirt on top, and a Michigan coat if it's cold. Top it off with a Michigan hat and some Maize and Blue Jordans.
