OT(ish): Move MgoBlog to the Public Cloud?

Submitted by Sinsoftheschafer on

I want to thank our fearless leader for his effort in this site; as we sit here in the after-Harbaugh /pre-Gary glow I think its important to realize that none of this would have likely come to pass if it wasn't for him and his efforts.  I don't think this is hyperbole; his email outing was the final nail in the Brandon coffin.

That said, I feel like the site infrastructure lets us down on days like today.  We basically punted the server load to twitter to avoid the Gary rush.  In this day and age, it feels like elastic computing has evolved to the point where we shouldn't have to do this.  A comination of pre-packaged dupal (Cloud Formation/Cloud Laucher on AWS/GCP) and elastic load balancing/autoscaling should enable our leader to a)lower is bill and b)support #chaos.  Sooooo: are there any mgocloud arcitechts out there who would love to chip in a reccomend a solution to keep the site performant at all times?

this thread reads like an interdepartment committee meetings where a bunch of non IT people suggest expensive new solutions their department isn't paying for and they don't have to implement.

There's a clear prioritization of the content over the board functionality. I know this because Brian has explicitly said this. Which is cool, it's his site, and the content is excellent.

But that's why I think my suggestion is a pretty good one - allow people to make specific donations to a fund to improve board functionality, and if you feel the need, insist it be accompanied by a matching donation to beveled guilt. That way there's no cannibalization of beveled guilt donations.

And it sounds like some people here know what they're talking about and have some skills to contribute. I think it probably is up to the denizens of this board to make the board better. Brian is very busy running the overall site (along with his related endeavors).

would we still be able to post using these words:  shit, piss, fuck, cunt, cocksucker, motherfucker, and tits?

I mean if I can't post "BTW, FUCK penn state" I'll probably stop visiting here.

And the business argument for it is simple: more eyeballs during high traffic times = more ad revenue.  Hopefully that would offset or at least mitigate any increased hosting costs. Without knowing the whole infrastructure we’re just guessing at solutions, but I agree with other posts that Drupal is likely a main culprit.  I just hope the post for a dev. was answered and they get a workable solution implemented.

And while we’re making wish lists: responsive site redesign, por favor.

Black Friday is the noted day after Thanksgiving when retailers who have been losing money all year, suddenly show a profit due to all of the holiday shopping. With all of the potential eyeballs on the site today, it shoud be very profitable in terms of ad revenue. I followed the proceedings on Twitter instead of MGoBlog. Something's not right about that.

More than 1 server with data replication and an F5 load balancer in front of them. Community donations for the equipment and I think your problems go away regardless of the backend. I think that's easier than a complete site redesign.

The professional content on this site is A++; I can't think of a more readable, concise, thorough, thoughtful source for info on Michigan sports. MGoBlog is simply the best. By a long way, in my opinion.

But the delivery mechanism...oh boy. There's just so much broken here that doesn't have to be.

It's seriously like ordering the best food on the planet and having it thrown into the rusted out, rain-saturated trunk of a 72 Pinto with bald tires and no working gauges, and a meth-head behind the wheel delivering it to you in, well, maybe he'll deliver it to you and maybe 502.

One idea would be a GoFundMe or the like to cover costs for a new delivery vehicle. Sounds like there are some smart, skilled people on the board who would help with planning and execution.

After the Gary verbal and buried within the topic of his commitment was a picture of the mgoblog 502 error page. They were ragging on the server like no other. Those assholes can poke fun at Michigan all they want, but not our damn blog. If those mouthbreathers can have a site that doesn't crash, then we sure as hell shouldn't. I bet we could easily raise the dough needed.
