Why did people throw toilet paper and later marshmellows

onto the field in the 80's and 90's? Could some UM grads of that era give us some insight into why? I've always wondered why people did that.

In the later 70s, there was also the "Shit Band."  A small group of band members would go from section to section wearing their foul weather gear on even the sunniest days.  They would play a few notes in the direction of a part of the student section who would respond in unison with a resounding "SHIT"!   Da Da, Da Da, Da DA! . . . SHIT!   This would go back and forth three or four times and the band would move on to another section.  As noted above, there was much drinking, smoking and everything else going on in the student section at the time, but I really do think this happened.

Throwing toilet paper became less prevalent in the late 1970s when the U took rolls out of the dorms and replaced them with sheets.

Marshmellows where commonly used by rival fans in road games to conceal pennies.  There's significant pain associated with a marshmellow spiked with 20 pennies fast balled into a players head.

But the marshmellows started with Desmond Howard's magical Hiesman year. The student section would throw them into the endzone to "soften" his pattened diving touchdown grabs! I cant believe I am the only one to remember this (which also makes me think I may have made it up in my head, but I dont think so). Can anyone confirm or refute this?
