BBall Recruiting - New 2019 Target/David Skogman

Submitted by Matt EM on February 20th, 2019 at 7:42 AM

I've been able to confirm with multiple folks in the know that Michigan has entered the mix for 2019 center David Skogman out of Waukesha West, WI (Milwaukee area). David was not willing to go on record for an interview, however.

Caveats apply, as I've never viewed Skogman live, but based on watching film I'd place him in the 80-120 range for my rankings (I'm always conservative if I haven't seen a prospect live). To put in context, I don't think Skogman has the skillset of a Colin Castleton at the same age, but has a more advanced skillset than Teske at the same age.

Short Eval:

Pros:

Shooting - stretches the floor from distance with repeatable mechanics, even if the shot mechanics aren't the most cosmetically pleasing

Passing - really, really impressed with his passing out of double teams in both the post and when he collapses the defense off the dribble. Really good spatial awareness

Ball Skills - not as advanced as Wagner at the same stage, but a decent  handle at that size and has solid control of the ball for a prospect of that size. May be able to take a dribble or two at the next level facing-up

Fluid - probably an average athlete, but he moves well in terms of running the floor and not being stiff in general

Cons:

Lacks Explosion - decent run and jump athlete (meaning if he has space and is able to get momentum going prior to jumping), but struggles to get verticality from a stagnant position or through contact. His verticality (or lack thereof) reminds me a lot of Teske a the same age.

Back to the Basket Game - really a lost art in modern basketball, but Stogman doesn't display any use of the pivot as a post option. Doesn't even really display a simple jumphook over the left shoulder.

Preliminary Comparison - a poor man's version of former Bucknell center Mike Muscala (now in the NBA)

Offers - has picked up offers from Minnesota, Vanderbilt and Nebraska within the past month alone. Also holds offers from Texas Tech and Rutgers to go along with multiple mid-majors

This  has the feel of a classic Beilein recruitment..........a 'who that' type prospect that is a late bloomer/comes on strong late and Michigan may be in position to offer some attractive features in terms of a path to playing time and development.

The more interesting thing though is that this, along with the Lester Quinones recruitment, signals the staff is anticipating attrition of some form. I have a pretty good idea of what that attrition looks like, but I'll let that play its course.

Does no one think Teske is a risk to leave early?  He's 7' legit, which is rare in itself.  He's an excellent defender, can move his feet and not foul.  Has a good shot at midrange and can develop from 3 point range.  Limited athletically compared to the beasts in the NBA, sure.  But he seems to have potential for a second half of the first round.

No?  Ok good.

Teske is a high floor, low ceiling NBA prospect for me. He's never going to be a major athlete. But he's a good defender and could develop into a solid shooter for a big man. There's definitely a place in the league for a player like that. But because he doesn't have massive potential due to his limited athleticism, I can see teams looking at boom or bust prospects at that position instead of Teske.

Fair enough.  It just seems like second half of the first round isn't getting you a dominant player in today's NBA, you're getting a role player or a piece.  I could see a good team taking Teske at that point, either to add his skills because they don't have them, or to replace a similar role player that's moving on in free agency.

And that's all you need - second half of first round projection is a go to the NBA decision.

Second half of the first round is very very optimistic for Teske. You're looking at guys like Clint Capela at that point. Go look at the list of centers drafted in the first round the past few years. Other than the top 10 guys, they're all athletic players that either have a ton of potential. Teske is more of a second half of the second round type prospect. I think if he left this year, he could get drafted. But not in the first. Same after his senior year.

Thanks for this info, it is always appreciated!  As far as whose departure this young man's recruitment may signal, I have no intel or connection -- but inferring from watching the team this year, my guess is that (aside from Charles) Teske and Iggy leave for the NBA.  My rationale:

  • Teske is a genius defender.  He never turns the ball over. He can shoot with real range (just has to improve the shot).  In the NBA, his athleticism would be a limiting factor, but I think there's more than one type of athleticism to look for.  Teske is not necessarily explosive / quick twitch.  But I've rarely seen a giant man have such strong endurance. He can play forever it seems, and not lose a ton of defensive efficiency.  He also has the offensive fundamentals to solidify things like FT's and the 3 pointer by virtue of being in the NBA and exclusively working on basketball rather than Econ homework. I could see him turning into a Marc Gasol type figure with a better jump shot.  Gasol won the defensive player of the year and I'm not sure he was able to jump over a stack of three phone books -- but his help defense, timing, and intelligence were unparalleled.
  • Iggy is a gunner who has infinite self-confidence.  He'll be 21 by January of next year, and his skill-set doesn't appear to have a lot of room for development outside of the mental aspects of the game, especially distributing the ball and understanding his role in spacing, being magnetic to other defenders.  However, he's a bowling ball going to the rim, and can shoot the hell out of the ball -- the two most important skill sets for a wing at the NBA level, as we know that the numbers are pushing towards the most efficient shots (twos at the rim and 3's). He reminds me of D-mo in the sense that I think it would honestly be better for him to stay another year and develop mentally under Beilein, but I don't think it will happen.

Just my two cents, no insider info here.  Thanks to those who do provide it!

I know nothing about this kid, but from your description alone he is a Do Not Want.    He sounds like another unathletic project that needs a couple years in Camp Sanderson and “developing”.   Beilein has to aim higher

He seems like decent prospect that could grow into a nice Beilein center. Seems to have a nice frame already with room to grow and is a decent athlete. I like his ability to put the ball on the floor near the hoop and get a good shot/dunk. His shot from is odd, but I think Beilein could help with that. I think he would be a Teske-esque situation where he doesn't exactly contribute until he's a sophomore-junior, but I think he could be a solid player

I am a graduate of Waukesha West, School nickname is the WOLVERINES !  class of 94 , Waukesha is a suburb of Milwaukee.

I wouldnt be shocked if Wisconsin gets in the mix. Especially with a lakc of bigs for Wisconsin with Happ leaving !

I'd assume Marquette could be in the mix also
