OT: World Cup Thread / GERMANY HAS BEEN ELIMINATED
Matches later today (2 ET):
Switzerland vs. Costa Rica
Serbia vs. Brazil
As it stands currently, Brazil and Switzerland will advance. If Serbia can pull an upset, they'll advance. Plenty of intrigue.
Also, with a stunning 2-0 loss to South Korea this morning, Germany has failed to advance past the group stage for the first time ever. Sweden wins the group, with Mexico advancing in 2nd place despite being pasted 3-0 by Sweden today.
France in 2002, Spain in 2014 and now Germany in 2018 -- as others have said, this might be the curse of the defending World Cup champions.
Croatia is winning the whole thing. They've been the best and most consistent team this World Cup
World Cup surprises constantly. Mexico almost royally screwed themselves. Fortunately, the Koreans saved them. But they have a much tougher draw though.
Props to Sweden for coming back from the late loss. Could have pouted but they went at it today and looked solid. Glad for the guy that was getting death threats and racist comments.
Also can we talk a little about how KILLER Sweden looked against Mexico? We (yes I'm a Swede) haven't played that well in a major tournament since we beat Bulgaria 4-0 at Euro 2004.
If we can play like that, Sweden can go far. Switzerland is good but we can beat them. Then the likely quarterfinals opponent would be England (who we historically play very well against) or Belgium (who beat us 1-0 in 2016). Also tough, but in neither case impossible.
