OT: Red Wings Sign Daniel Alfredsson - 1 Year/5.5 Million
Not quite the foray into Free Agency that I expected for the Red Wings - signing Daniel Alfredsson, a 41-year old Winger to a 1 year 5.5 Million deal...especially given their stated intentions of focusing on a youth movement...
But hey - maybe he helps mentor the young guys and helps push the Wings to the cup. And although pricey - it's only a one-year deal that won't cripple the Wings down the road.
I still think they need speed, speed, and oh yes...more speed. (MOAR?)
One of the great captains in the game.
--Also, as far as speed goes, Nyquist and Helm should have that covered.
He'll be a nice addition to Zetterberg's line but I hope they have enough money left over to get the second line center they'll need after they let Filpula go.
Tell Ken Holland to give Marc Bergavin a call and give him a few pointers on how to be a GM? Please...someone....
Just got Danny Briere, which is solid
That's what I'm complaining about. When is the last time Briere played a full season? When is the last time a guy his age, his size with his history of injury ever played a full season? Not to mention the fact that the Canadiens are full of little Briere type guys who are younger and better than Briere already.
I don't mean to sound like a jerk or than I am bitching at you, I'm just pissed at how ridicuolous it is that a guy who gets paid very well to do his job can look at the Canadiens roster, pick out the one type of player that we actually have in abundance and then go out and sign another. The last thing Montreal needed was a player like Danny Briere even if he were in his prime, let alone now that he is old (for hockey) and often injured. This just boggles the mind.
That's a good point. I was just using the perspective that Briere is a highly talented player, but you are right that the Habs have an abundance of the little guys.
Again, I hope you didn't take my rant as being directed at you because it wasn't. You were merely pointing out that Montreal had in fact signed someone. My rant was just out of frustration because this kind of signing makes no sense. The rant was actually intended for Marc Bergevin, though I know he doesn't read this blog because if he did he would have a whole lot more hockey sense than he does.
Fromreading this site as much as I do I could say with a lot of confidence that there are some posters here who would make far better GM's than mister Bergevin, no joke. Anyway, it must be nice to be wings fan. You guys scored big time with your signings.
Since Samuelsson was hurt all of last year, Holland was very bummed he had no fellow old man to share a brunch and afternoon tea with, so this signing makes total sense!
Solid signing. Ottawa is a divison rival next year, and we just stripped them of their heart and soul. 3.5 cap hit with another 2 M in bonus. This signing spelled the end for Cleary, who I couldnt bear to watch as a top 6 forward on this team any longer. Weiss is next?
In related news, Al Montoya resigned with Winnipeg and Mike Komisarek signed with Carolina. Always good to have Michigan alums in the league
Good pickup. This guy still has some game left and is a leader too. Will fit in well with the other Swedes. Maybe he will be like Gordie Howe and get 103 pts at age 40.
CBS says this deal is for 2 years and 3.5 million. Huge difference from what the OP said.
Then the Sens trade for Bobby Ryan... Ugh... It seems like the Wings don't want to give up prospects in deals (like Nash last year) but are willing to sign 40 year olds and bury those prospects in the AHL. They're going to have to trade a forward or two now anyway. Tootoo, Bertuzzi, Samuelsson, and Eaves. Tatar is out of options. Nyquist and Andersson should be on the team next year.
I'm not quite ready to bang on Holland's door like some people but some of these deals, or lack there of, have made me scratch my head over the past few years.

. Holland did just about everything besides overnight FedEx'ing the players he offered to acquire Nash. You can complain about Holland all you want but not acquiring Rick Nash because he didn't want to give up prospects is just plain false.
