OT: Artery Clogging Fair Food
So this is extremely OT, but one of my favorite preludes to football season in the midwest is fair season. I always hit the Monroe County Fair for two reasons. The tractor pull and the Hot Wisconsin Cheese. They may be way overpriced, but I'll gladly pay it.
An evening of full pulls, dollar root beers from Bayou Billy and cheddar nuggets always leaves me with an expectant feeling for fall. I know many of us here have midwestern roots, whether we still live in the area or not. What fair food or activity will get you primed for the fall?
To save anyone else the trouble-
A Garbage Plate is a combination of one selection of cheeseburger, hamburger, red hots, white hots, Italian sausage, chicken tender, fish (haddock), fried ham, grilled cheese, or eggs; and two sides of either home fries, French fries, baked beans, or macaroni salad. On top of that are the options of mustard and onions, and Nick's proprietary hot sauce, a sauce with spices and slowly simmered ground beef. It's served with rolls or Italian toast on the side
Sounds disgusting and delicious all at once.
That looks incredibly delicious. As a person with Greek ancestry, I have never understood what culinary transformation happens to a Greek cook when they move to the US and start a diner. Their traditional food is so much different, and yet they have perfected the greasy spoon menu. I'm not complaining, just enjoying the results.
Nick liked to wander through the restaurant, sit down and tell his stories to entertain the customers.
One favorite he probably told a million times: "When I married my wife she thought I was a Greek God. Now she thinks I am a god damn Greek."
Turkey legs with a side of bbq sauce!
So, for me, staying inside in the cool AC while I continue reading the "Game of Thrones" series of books and watching "Falling Skies" works just fine for me.
Every year I look forward to my cheese on a stick at the Shiawassee County Fair. A cheese on a stick, some fair fries, and a $6 lemonade make a great meal. Then its time for an apple cider slush for desert.
