Brian talks about this in his analysis, and I think he makes a good point.

If you have an offense that engages in quick strikes down the field, or can't stay on the field, or gets however many yards per minute on the field--I don't think this is necessarily a bad thing, but it is different

The difference will show in the number of times the defense has to take the field. It will impact, as noted by Huyge in his recent interview on the frontpage, how tired the defense is. There's also the raw "number of attempts" the opposing offense gets.

Do you see what I mean?

The defense is much better in points allowed, much more so than it is with respect to other metrics like yards allowed per play (For more on this, click here).

But in fact all that matters in terms of performance is points. You might be right that points allowed per game might not be the best way to predict future defensive performance. On the other hand, using any metric the defense has improved more than any of us could have predicted in our sober moments.

I disagree that points are the bottom line. It's points relative to possessions, and I don't mean that in a sarcastic "winning" way. Especially since our offense's efficiency has changed, we need to check out the points relative to possessions to standardize things and make them comparable.

I agree that the defense has improved! I wrote that in my first post, just to be clear that I'm not disputing that idea. I just don't think 'points allowed' is a good way of looking at it.
