Softball vs. Kentucky Open Thread

Top of the second, 0-0. Let's go girls! Lost 7-6 yesterday to Kentucky, but that was with a great comeback, making it a good game.

We need to win two more to advance, loss and we're done.

Crazy impressed with this team.  Just two tough losses to Kentucky.  A tough first loss with some rough calls and a comeback that fell short, one run loss... and now this, a Kentucky comeback that is completed with a 60+ foot looper hit, one run loss.

Great season, ladies.

Sad to see the season end.....also from every game I watched this season this was the worst possible time for the team to go into a funk. They didn't look comfortable all weekend long.

Congrats to the ladies for a great regular season and hope next year brings better fortunes.

This is how softball works, you ride one girl's right or left arm (Jennie Ritter, Cat Osterman, the Canadian whose name I'm forgetting for Washington last year, Monica Abbott, etc.).  Something about the throwing motion doesn't put as much strain on the shoulder so it's totally doable, though I don't understand why.

I don't know why you would play your WHOLE infield that far in that situation... if the first baseman is playing at regular depth that is an out.  I could see the third baseman needing to play in, but the pitcher can take the bunt down the first baseline.

in that situation the play is at home...the other runners dont matter. You have to play both of them up to eliminate a bunt down the first base line and force your pitcher to have to make the play.

it was the right play with a good cheap hit to win it. Both teams played it correctly.

Because you have to get the out at home.  It's more likely for there to be a ground ball right at someone than a little looper over first base.

Also, for Taylor to make that play as a right handed pitcher in time to get the pinch runner (and thus presumably the fastest girl they've got) would be an absurdly athletic play.

I am not that up on Softball however this team was going to struggle with the injuries to the two sluggers at the end of the year.  JT had a great career and I heard a rumor that an incoming Freshman pitcher might even be better then JT.  Young team and with some hitting looking for B10 Championship #5 in a row next year.

We had 2 of our top players out (Kirkpatrick and Sappingfiled).  So I was not that bummed when we lost.

I will be posting some "HELLO" posts regarding some of  our recruits.  I will give you a hint.  The pitcher we have coming in this fall is probably going to content with JT for some records.  This girl is the real deal.

I will wait until the HS season is over before I do a profile on her.  We have some good utility players coming as well.

The worst part about this loss: we don't get to see the beautiful face of #18 when the cameraman cuts to the dugout anymore.

Congrats to the ladies for an over-achiving season! Lack of pitching depth, losing an up and coming star, #2 hitter late in the season, plus the starting SS early in the season, and still achieve everything they did.

Tough, tough loss today, but thanks for making it exciting all year!

not that bad for us.  I am sad for JT as she pitched her ass off.  But she always hung in there.  I got a chance to chat with her for a second after the game and she said she would give up all her accolades to go to Oklahoma City and the WS.

JT was visably shaken up.  She felt that she let her team down.  All I said to her was that we are all proud of you JT, thanks for all the memories over the past few years.  What a wonderful person she is.  Well I guess I can cancel my flight and hotel to OKC.

Another back story during the game, UK is a team that loves to play scrappy.  They are a very good team and a lot of fun to watch.  During the TV timeout, the UK 1st baseman was tryint to learn the words to the "Victors".  She was clapping her glove and pumping her fist.  It was nice to see her respect us in that manner.

The UK crowd was very polite and respectful.  They rarely got upset and seemed to enjoy AA.

The good news is that next year will be even better for sure.

Really, really disappointed to not get to go to a super-regional, it would've been tremendous fun.  Still, you absolutely cannot feel bad about a 53-6 record at the end of the season.  Great season from the team, and a fantastic year from Jordan Taylor, who will go down in M softball history as an all-time great.  Just tough that it had to end like this.

It was disapointing to say the least.  UK played well and deserved to win.

JT was full of emotion and even Hutch got a tear to her eye.  She said she was upset because JT had played her ass off.

It was a wonderful day in AA.  Everyone was out in force, Lloyd Carr, DB, Desmond Howard and many of the football team.  I even thought I saw Bo floating around.
