2011 NFL Draft

Submitted by Rico616 on

Its sports holiday today! The NFL Draft has to be one of my five favorite days on the sports calendar.

The Lions pick at 13 tonight, I have no idea who they'll draft. I've heard Tyron Smith, Prince Am, Bowers, Kerrigan, etc. I think all Lions fans can agree that they need help on OL and every aspect of defense.

What do you like best about the draft? Will it be when they draft Cam Newton, say he's a "cant miss" and 3 years later he's riding the pine? But like the commercial says...its where championships are built, I'm counting down the clock...

Also if interested, Todd McShay's 7 round mock draft, you have to be an espn insider:

Pouncey would be my first pick for sure - from what I have heard they are looking for a OT ratehr than a OG or C so I don't know if they will take him even if he is available. There should be a couple of good OTs available when we pick so it should be a solid first day for the G-Men regardless. Then I think we look for a LB in round 2 or 3 depending on who is available.

Lets keep our fingers crossed they take Pouncey if he falls to them!

I wouldn't mind the Lions trading down and getting somebody like Kerrigan.  I always like the non MSU (god damn you Stanton) and OSU Big Ten players on the Lions.  Plus, unless I'm gravely mistaken, Kerrigan has an outstanding character and work ethic.  I think Schwartz and Kerrigan would get along extremely well.

I think the main concerns with Kerrigan are that he has basically maxed out his upside in college, and projects as a tweener between 4-3 DE and 3-4 OLB in the NFL.  This draft is so deep on the DL, I'd rather see us draft OLB Akeem Ayers or DEs Cam Jordan or Adrian Clayborn.

This should be an interesting draft because this will be the first time ever that free agency is after the draft.  Usually teams can plug up holes in their roster with free agency, but this year that wasn't possible.

It will be interesting to see if teams draft for need or just pick the best player available.  There are lot of free agents QBs out there that could change the way teams draft.

I'm also interested in seeing how badly Roger Goodell will be booed.

I can't belive they took Newton!! I give him less than a 20% chance of ever winning and keeping a starting job at QB in the NFL, much less actually living up to that pick or winning a SB.

Almost feels to me like it was politcal pressure that made them draft him 1st, Like if he was passed over it would be percieved as a race thing based on Jemarcus, Young etc. Even though there 2x as many white busts at QB it seems like opinion leans against super athletic QB's coming out of college.'  I like Gabbert of all the QB's in this draft. Did more with less than any of the others.

Lions did great nabbing Fairley where they did. Guys that big, strong & fast are just simply a far rarer commodity than another hyped up 6 ft, 190lb corner.  Those guys(DB's & WR's) just seem to be random. Lots of good ones taken early with big reputations but also a good # of late bloomers that can be had for less. Rarely is a DT or great DE a real surprise coming out of the 5th round.

Taking Fairly is building like the Steelers of old. Build from the inside out, defense first. Steelers taking Joe Green with a 1st pick, LC Greenwood early and guys like Ham, Lambert etc. was what laid the real foundation for the dynasty they became. I like that Detroit is at least projecting a real long term strategy with their picks. That D-line may have just become the best in the NFL. Look at history, teams that lead the league in sacks are usually playing in playoff games. Imagine if Suh was not being double & triple teamed vs. Brady.
