I live in Gilbert which is 15 miles east of Tempe, if you like good BBQ, one of the best places I have had is Joe's real BBQ in Gilbert. In Chandler AZ, there is a restaurant called Chino Bandido, which is an infusion of Mexican and Chinese!
If you like some good ole fashion Honky tonk and a fun saloon you can try out rusty spur in old town Scottsdale. They have live music and a great atmosphere!
If the wife wants to shop there are numerous places, my wife's favorite is San tan village mall in Gilbert, this mall is all outside and really nice. If you are looking for some deals, there are some great outlets about 20 minutes north of Phoenix called the anthem outlets, another very nice shopping area.
