Currently in Edinburgh, Scotland, but just spent 3 days in London. It is an amazing city! The advice given above is excellent. I wish I had known some of that myself. I would whole-heartedly agree with the commentors discussing cheap hotel rooms particularly due to jet lag. I thought I was clever enough to beat it. I was wrong!
The tube is quite busy but a great way to get around the city. Oyster cards are probably the way to go for that. My wife and I also utilized Uber while there. It is cheaper than the cabs and you can see the city above ground. If you want to/have the time, the hop on/hop off bus tours are also a nice way to familiarize yourself with the sights and history of the city and get around while not eating up your whole day. Pubs are fun - plenty of casked ales and lagers - Unfortunately rarely ever above 5% abv, so you'll have to work at it to get a buzz. Drinking in a pub that is older than the USA is kinda cool.
Parks are beautiful, people are great. You will really enjoy your time there and look forward to your next visit. I'm hoping to return again soon and stay for longer. Cheers!
I would like to second everything bcoop713 has said. Excellent advice.
Drink with someone who understands and has a passion for beer. They can educate you on the differences between the beer types and even why they are what they are (the origin of the IPA, Trappist beers, etc). Also, they probably have a better selection in their refrigerator than you do. If you live in MN, I'll gladly participate in your education!
I would identify not only the kinds of beer you like, but also the breweries you particularly like. It will make shopping or selecting from tap much less overwhelming. You will at least know you like porters or IPA's and can try some from other breweries. On the flip side, you may be open to trying other types of beer soley on the fact that you know it is made by a respectable brewing company that you like, and you know they do good work.
Mix and match 6 packs are a wonderful thing.
Beer advocate is also a nice resource.
All this talk of beer has made me thirsty... Hopslam here I come.
I'll have to agree that the Parlour burger is pretty amazing. Minneapolis has an amazing burger scene. I have probably shaved off a couple years of my life by taking advantage of it.
Blimpy burger was okay. Glad I tried it, but probably won't wait in that line again.
Sent the misses on a mission to find some pazckis at a local eastern european restaurant and bakery. While there, she picked up some sausages and is making jambalaya for dinner. She also got me a case of hopslam for valentine's day.
So yeah, I pretty much have the best wife ever...
I'll add my vote for Frita Batidos. I saw the thread and logged on just to add it to the list, but obviously many other foodie mgobloggers beat me to it. The place is amazing.
I was really excited about this until I saw the prices.
I drop some money on wine every now and then, but $100+ just seems a bit steep for a bottle of wine with any NFL football player's name on it. I don't care who they are. Woodson is by far one of my favorite players ever, but that is not going to entice me to buy a bottle of his wine for that much money when I can get Caymus Special Selection or Dominus for about the same price. C'mon man!
Wish I would have known about this earlier. My wife and I were in Napa earlier this year and would have stopped by for a taste.
I do feel for Hoke. He loves this University. He just is not the man for the job and he knows it. Looks like he is about to cry out there. I'll be happy to see him gone, but can't help but feel for him.
