I hope the same people who slammed Borges for being too complicated don't slam Nuss for being too simple. (No, I won't be putting any money on this.)
Nuss's resume is pretty spotless. It seems safe to say that, if the offense lags in 2014, much of that will be due to problems he inherited.
I think our most realistic hope for the offense is that it's much better by the end of the year than it is in the beginning.
|2 days 7 hours ago||They had eight NCAA wins in two years||
Not too bad.
|2 days 10 hours ago||The 2 and 3||
Blackmon or Booker would have been great, and that's also where Michigan will (apparently) lose out from a purely basketball perspective because of Hatch's injuries.
The roster turnover is getting pretty nuts. I sure hope that five star guys start seeing Michigan as a place to go to get to the NBA. I'm not sure how long any coach can keep turning diamonds in the rough into quality starters, especially when that coach has to resort to recruiting guys with almost no D1 offers.
|2 days 10 hours ago||MAAR||
At the risk of being a downer, that's a wonky looking shot he shows in his highlights.
|3 days 1 hour ago||he should do what's best for him, but...||
...the difference between him staying or going is the difference between having a potential All American or a crater at center.
|3 days 2 hours ago||bro hug returned||
Now, let's walk away awkwardly.
|3 days 4 hours ago||I fully expect them all to leave, but...||
Burke held a press conference saying he was staying in 2012 (IIRC), and GRIII and McGary did the same last year.
|3 days 4 hours ago||FWIW||
I appreciate your original post. It's informative at best and entertaining at worst.
Also, I selfishly hope Josh B is super-persuasive if what you say is true.
|3 days 4 hours ago||It is||
I don't begrudge the guys one bit for leaving, but it's hard to watch guys have good but not great years and still leave. I'm not saying they're wrong to do it. I'm just saying it's hard to watch. Selfishly, I miss the days when only the Webbers of the world left after their sophmore years.
It would be really tough to lose McGary, because Michigan's only had one and a quarter seasons with him. I expect him to leave, though.
|3 days 4 hours ago||Indeed||
Who is this "Nik Stauskas" who claims to know so much about Nik Stauskas?
|3 days 5 hours ago||They'll be a tournament team at best||
The only proven depth will be at PG.
LeVert should be very good at SG, but he'll have a freshman back-up.
Irvin will be asked to make a huge leap in terms of taking on responsibility, and he'll also have a freshman as a back-up.
Donnal, as you note, is unproven, and his back-up will either be a freshman or Bielfeldt.
Center will be a gaping hole: True freshman Doyle (who I'm excited about long-term but not next year), Donnal (also needed at the four), and Bielfeldt.
Every game may be like the Kentucky game in terms of rebounding. Defense will be a big problem b/c of all the new faces. Offense should lag.
|3 days 8 hours ago||I'm with you||
A front line of Doyle, Donnal, Bielfeldt, Wilson, and Chatman could be very good in two years. This year, I would expect them to be hammered on the boards and when on defense.
|3 days 8 hours ago||Type of offense||
I think you can read Horford's MLive story in either direction. He said the offense wasn't a good fit for him, and you could run with that and believe that he wouldn't care if he played 30 minutes a night at Michigan because he would still wouldn't be getting the kind of touches he wants. However, his mother also said that Coach Beilein broke down for him "how things will be" (maybe not the exact quote) next year, and if that meant anything to Horford, it's easy to imagine him leaving b/c he believed McGary was going to stay.
My guess is that all three guys are gone, but that's just my guess.
|3 days 11 hours ago||yeah||
I initially defended Coach Hoke much more until some posters helped me see that - in the eyes of many - he had minimized what Gibbons had done. My own understanding of the phrase "family matter" - at the risk of repeating myself - is that it's something an employer or school says when an employee/student/teacher is gone and dealing with anything from an illness to alcohol rehab to a criminal charge.
|3 days 11 hours ago||No||
My initial hunch was that he was in rehab...Like I said, Gibbons didn't deserve the favor Hoke did for him. I wish Hoke had not done it.
|3 days 12 hours ago||"family matter" as colloquialism||
I immediately believed "family matter" was likely a euphemism for something potentially embarrassing. I wonder if that's a Dayton-area phrase (Coach Hoke being from the area too).
Because of that, I'm inclined to think that Coach Hoke said "family matter" with the belief that it wouldn't be taken literally. That's not to completely defend him, though, because you're doing someone a favor by using the phrase, and Gibbons certainly didn't deserve a favor more than other guys who were labeled as having violated team rules for lesser acts.
|3 days 12 hours ago||He had been expelled||
OSCR mailed (or at least produced) a letter to Gibbons saying he'd been expelled four days before Coach Hoke made his "family matter" comment.
|4 days 10 hours ago||the development of Green||
To my untrained eye, his h.s. highlights were not equal to those of your typical no. 1 runningback. Leonard Fournette looked much better to me, for instance. I thought Green in the spring game looked like about what you would expect from the guy in his highlights (IMO, neither bad nor great).
|4 days 10 hours ago||I realize they will play little or no offense...||
...this year, but I look at those units and wonder whether two of the best offensive talents on the roster will be Peppers and Dymonte Thomas. I also wonder whether - thinking just of this year - either will provide much of a difference on defense given Michigan's depth in the defensive backfield.
|6 days 6 hours ago||My general impression...||
...is that he's consistently more plugged into the football program than he is the basketball program. People here have said he's friends with Chris Singletary. I don't know whether that's true, but it might explain how he would be closer to the football team (assuming he doesn't have an equivalent friend in the basketball program).
|6 days 7 hours ago||I hope you're right, of course||
It seems very possible, though, that Horford thinks it doesn't matter if he gets more minutes at Michigan because he won't get the chance to play the way he wants to play, regardless of whether that's in 15 minutes or 30 minutes.
|6 days 7 hours ago||Hmmm...||
How does he feel about playing the five in Beilein's offense?
|6 days 7 hours ago||Could be a number of reasons||
Maybe he wants to announce he's returning with GRIII if possible but GRIII hasn't decided. That's just a thought. My hunch is that they're all gone (mostly b/c that's Sam Webb's hunch), but I wouldn't worry about the timing of the announcement.
|6 days 8 hours ago||And if we are not free to do that...||
...then, among many other bad things, one of the best principles on which the country was founded is lost.
|1 week 42 min ago||certainly a good question||
As with any loan, the devil would be in the details. Though you could argue that such a player would be no worse off than a person with no income who owes student loan debt.
|1 week 47 min ago||Those are some pretty reasonable suggestions||
The loan idea could be problematic, but everything else is straightforward and relatively easy to implement.
|1 week 6 hours ago||Yep||
Not a mistake Calipari would make.
|1 week 6 hours ago||Wow - not what I expected||
As we've all been saying, though, Horford was going to play a good amount of minutes this coming year even if McGary came back. I'm confused.
|1 week 6 hours ago||It's about the four||
Michigan will be undersized if Donnal is at the five because it will leave Wilson, Chatman, and Bielfeldt (and GRIII if he comes back) at the four. Wilson and Chatman have some length, but they're really skinny...I'm assuming Doyle is a five all the way, btw.
|1 week 6 hours ago||I agree that he can play minutes there, but...||
I doubt Beilein is looking to play him there, as the post suggested.
