Yes, safeties making a lot of tackles is bad but having a stud D-line that made a ton of tackles didn't help Harris' stats.
I also completely disagree that bad middle LB's make a ton of tackles. They make more tackles than say a bad cornerback but they certainly make a lot less than a good middle LB.
And I should have posted my feelings on that point in the first post. While you can argue that better complimenting players help the defense as a whole I believe that when the majority of the players around you are bad, decent to good players tend to make a LOT of plays simply because nobody else is there to make them. Case in point is Jordan Kovacs. Kovacs is a good player but do you think he would be about to break the all-time tackle record for a DB at Michigan if he didn't play on some terrible defenses? I don't think so.
1. The 2006 defense was loaded with NFL level talent making it harder to come by tackles.
2. Stats don't show where those tackles were made or how they were made. Harris was almost always in the right place and a major reason why team rushed for almost nothing week after week.
3. Stats don't show blown assignments. Demens missed his assignment on numerous occasions or got blocked clean out of the play plenty of times. Harris was a machine and even if couldn't make the tackle he held his spot better than most college LB's I have seen. He almost never made major mistakes and controlled the defense.
David Harris is a pro bowl LB for a reason and one of the most underrated players ever to wear a Michigan uniform. Demens career isn't over yet but it will take an enormous leap for him to get to Harris' level, in my opinion.
Josh Helmholdt has said that he was very close to Frey and that is the main reason he decommited in the first place. At this point I feel like he is very open but it is never a good sign that the guy decommited 3 weeks before signing day. We will see.
I love how Spartanmag is the first one to break that story. On the bright side at least the staff is filling out. How we have not paid some top DC a ton of cash yet is beyond me. With the amount of money we saved from getting Hoke instead of Harbaugh or Miles we should be able to get the very best DC.
I understand the reason behind them but in this case he obviously was writing the post at the same time the other guy was and along comes Rule Nazi. It's an online sports blog for crissake!
I have been pleasantly surprised with Smith's improved agility the past couple of weeks and think that it is a result of additional healing time on his knee. In the best case scenario he should be fully healed by next year and Smith will take another big leap.
Has anybody noticed that Denard ALWAYS lands on his right side when he is tackled? I mean every single time. I'm not sure if he was taught to do that but considering he throws with his right arm, maybe it isn't the best idea to keep smashing it into the ground.
I think, more than anything, his drop occurred because some other player was moved up into four star range. I'm not too worried about him being a solid prospect. What is more surprising to me is that Kellen Jones dropped even though he is having a monster season.
There is absolutely no need for the outside layer of a football helmet to be solid plastic. Adding an additional soft, yet dense layer to the outside portion of the helmet will at least marginally dull hard impacts. If it helps even one player it would be worth the change because there is no legitimate reason to keep the current helmet design.
He got hit in the chest so hard that he coughed up some blood. Denard has to try to not lead his receivers into that kind of hit. The good news is he was released right away and he said he was fine to play next week

Schadenfreude at its best I'm sure
Thin candy shell....Surprised you didn't know that

And for good measure.....
Michigan will go 13-0 this year when Demens has a David Harris type year at MLB.
