- To bring Jennings into this discussion at all, your position necessarily is that a non-contending team should make draft selctions based on the team's needs.
- When you are a non-contending team, your needs are somewhere between everything and a bunch of things.
- Filling one need only fills one need. You still have many others.
- However, if you draft to acquire the most valuable asset (the best player available), you can use the higher value of that asset to satisfy more of your needs. For example, if the Pistons were to trade with the Jazz tomorrow, the Jazz would trade Burke to the Pistons for KCP and something else.
- That "something else" can be used to fill one of your non-contending team's many other needs.
- NBA Players are fungible so having having 2 point guards and 0 shoooting guards, per your characterization of what the Pistons would have had if they drafted Burke, is not an actual problem. This last point is especially true if Jennings is as talented as you believe him to be.

Good point. A bunch of D lineman and a WR probably running screens "jumped out." Hopefully not an indication of where the OL is, but this is likely evidence the OL may still be struggling. As noted above, Glasgow could also be included in the DL category depending on which Glasgow he is talking about.

Exactly. I was trying to be gentle because people are sensitive about baseball and it is blasphemy to say something like that in some circles. The "bad guys" will always stay in front of the law in this one, in large part because the law is not interested in catching the "bad guys" as much as they want people to think they did. The law profits off PEDs too. I would bet more profit was made off Barry Bonds and Mark McGwire than was made on all teams that played in the 1910s combined.

I get the impression from people in my life who are currently (and another recently) trying to break into the bigs that steroids aren't so much out of the game as they are out of the public media. But then again, maybe I am a random internet poster who made that up. And if I didn't make that up, maybe they were lying to me or it was constrained within the teams they were on.

Would imagine it is hard to turn down cash for better odds, especially somone in Scherzer's situation:
- Cash you can see, hold, spend, and use to blow lines off strippers. Odds are abstract and have subjective components.
- You and I understand measuring the odds as the outset to calculate and evaluate the best decision, regardless of result that in fact occurs. Most people don't. Examples of bad results that make your less cash decision look bad in hindsight include, but are not limited to: (1) Talking less cash and still not winning; (2) Team doesn't spend the cash you save them; (3) Team spends cash you save them on D-Train; (4) Team would have won the World Series anyway; (5) and the best one, team trades you and beats your new team in the World Series in part because of the cash they saved on you.
- There is always "I was the best pitcher in the AL last year why am I susposed to take less cash and player X is not. Why don't you ask him to improve our odds because he's not doing it with his play, as I am."
- Another point would be this whole thing assumes the tigers are operating within a budget-like thing where taking less cash is even a relevant consideration in calculating odds. This also assumes the reports are true regarding the negotiation.

Co-Sign, especially the impossible to judge part.
Both are on shitty teams, Burke plays more on his so we know more about him (but could argue KCP can't get minutes on a shitty team so we know more about him aka he's bad, etc.), though not the full picture because those minutes are alongside shitty players.
That is essentially what I meant subjectively with my comment above. Add the word "happens" to the end and you get what was actually in my head when I was writing it, meaning that if Burke is an all star and KCP flames out people will still defend the pick. Was trying to point out people defend irrational things (for example, I bet you can find someone who will argue Hitler had a net positive impact on society or whaterver) and didn't intend to infer this particular opinion was irrational, even though the comment can be read as such.

For anyone who doesn't want to look this up, the season numbers for the above stats are 38.2-34.8-91.6. A non-exhaustive list of other relevant stats are 5.1 APG, 1.8 TO/G (2.83 ratio), 1.5 FTA/G.
Advanced: 12.9 PER, 47.7 TS%, 44.9 eFG%, 5.6 REB%, 28.9 AST%, .9 STL%, 12.1 TO%, 22.1 USG%, 101 ORtg, 114 Drtg, .9 OWS, .1 DWS, 1.0 WS, .027 WS/48.
For KCP, 39.1-30.5-77.6, with .7 APG, .4 TO/G (1.75 ratio), .7 FTA/G.
Advanced: 8.7 PER, 47.8 TS%, 45.5 eFG%, 5.1 REB%, 5.2 AST%, 2.4 STL%, 6.2 TO%, 13.4 USG%, 104 ORtg, 110 DRtg, .6 OWS, .9 DWS, 1.4 WS, .051 WS/48
Without joining the argument and recognizing this is 1 small paragraph in your otherwise valid argument, but because this bothers me for whatever reason, I still think the skill of the rookie class as a whole is irrelevant when comparing who should be drafted as between these 2 players. To include the skill of everyone else within an argument about Burke vs. KCP, I feel like you have to be essentially arguing "why hold the draft everyone from the Piston's pick down had a value of 0, Burke and KCP are within that group of 0 value players, thus KCP was not a worse pick, he had the exact same value, 0." I think I'm inclined to disagree with that extrapolated agrument but whatever I just say that in hopes of limiting the discussion to the relative values of KCP vs. Burke.
Outside of relative player values, you have to think Dumars is at least looking at the fact that Pistons rank last in % of arena capacity sold per game and thinking what that number would look like if he drafted Burke. Would imagine merchandise sales show a similar league rank. There may be people going to games specifically to see KCP, but I would be very surprised if that numbr is higher than people going to games specifically to see Burke.

She called all the Rivals people to report it because Scout wouldn't hold a press conference for her. Also, she wanted to announce the launch of her new book called "Parenting: You know what's best for your son in all circumstances." Chapter 1 was called "You do you girl even if your actions damage your son's reputation." Chapter 2 was called "How to extend your 15 minutes of fame." Chapter 3 was a comparative study of American universities finding Michigan State to be the only school in the country where shenanigans take place. I don't want to spoil the rest of the book, but the 1,684 page autobiography in Chapter 7 holds a special place in my heart.

This is the distinction. You guys are using (rightfully so with the thread topic) "playing well" to mean relative to other rookies. I am thinking of "playing well" as meaning relatiive to other NBA players.
|25 weeks 2 days ago||I was confused because he was||
I was confused because he was discussing how our guys were doing well in the NBA and then made a comment on the overall talent of the draft class, which isn't relevant to how good our guys are doing in the NBA.
Unless you can explain to me how Trey Burke's preformance in the NBA is dependent upon Anthony Bennett's preformance in the NBA? Then I agree you wouldn't need to imply anything.
|25 weeks 2 days ago||I could see how that would be||
I could see how that would be your opinion if you are making a subjective talent evaluation. If you are looking at stats against NBA competition, the draft class looks similar to those of the past. One would also expect rookie's to raise their averages toward the end of the year so the stats from current rookies should be lower than previous classes with 20 games left:
