Zach Hyman, a goal in each game of EDM-CAL series
He even had 2 goals in game 1! Game 5 has been highly entertaining at Calgary playing for their playoff lives down 3 games to 1. Hyman scored the Oilers 3rd goal tonight and assisted on the previous 2. 7 goals were scored in the 2nd, and they went scoreless in the 3rd. Although a Flames goal was disallowed late in regulation because of a kicking motion? On to OT, 4 apiece.
should’ve read EDM-CGY
So it was NOT the California Golden Seals who lost in overtime 5-4.
Now I'm wondering how many here remember such an NHL team once existed.
Old enough here to remember the team that became the Cleveland Barons.
I knew all this prior and am not simply copying the Wiki, but the California Golden Seal legacy is ----- sort of ----- still "active" in the NHL today as the Dallas Stars.
They went from California to Cleveland to merging with Minnesota (a merger in the late 1970s, the teams combined rosters, the North Stars owners kept the team, keeping the North Stars logo and history while Cleveland officially folded). Then Minnesota of course to Dallas.
-----
After the merger, the California Golden Seal/Cleveland Baron owners came back to the NHL in the early 1990s, being granted the expansion San Jose Sharks. So in a way things went full circle: same owners, back in the Bay Area again.
I remember being dumbfounded about this when I was younger, in the mid 90’s. It’s such a bizarre history.
The 70s were definitely pro sports' "fly by night" decade in terms of how things were run. You read up on all the sports leagues and so many people were just doing it by the seat of their pants!
Indicative of the decade I presume (I was born in '79 so I didn't really experience it)
The NHL added 8 teams in the 1970s. Only 3 of them are still located in the same spot they started. The NY Islanders, Washington and Edmonton. Atlanta became Calgary, Kansas City became New Jersey by way of Colorado, Hartford became Carolina, Quebec became Colorado and Winnipeg became Arizona.
It was definitely a weird time. I was born in '81 so when I was 9 or 10 and became obsessed with hockey, the NHL and the Rangers, I wanted to read and learn as much of the history of the sport that I could.
There were more than those 3 that stayed from the 70's expansion though. Buffalo, Vancouver need to be added but the WHA had a huge impact and influence on the NHL on where expansion teams were awarded to with the Islanders, Atlanta and Vancouver being the main ones.
Yep my bad. Vancouver and Buffalo joined in 1970. I thought it was 1969.
My old coach played for the Golden Seals back in the day! Haven't thought about that in a decade or two.
I’m 36 and had no idea lol
Hyman has been an absolutely monster this series. And yes, that was a kicking motion. Toronto was the right to overturn.
I'm shocked I'm seeing as many "it was a goal" comments as I am. 100%, it was distinctive kicking motion on that play.
College hockey is so much better than the NHL.
I love college hockey, but there's nothing like the stanley cup playoffs. This is awesome hockey
Not only are the Stanley Cup Playoffs the best hockey, it’s also the best moment/tournament/playoffs of all sports at any level.
NHL requires the best athletes. Hand eye coordination of baseball, physicality of football without all the stopping and standing around for 3 minutes in between each 4 second play, agility of basketball ... on freaking ice, and the speed which cannot be matched in any sport.
The Stanley Cup Playoffs are the greatest sporting event to ever have been created in the history of the universe. No one in the NBA/MLB/NFL is going to be playing in the playoffs with torn ACL, broken leg/arm/hand, missing teeth, stitches, etc.
False.
The talent level in NHL vs college is wider than NFL v college. Wider than probably any sport except baseball.
Every year rookies will have great seasons right off the bat in NFL and NBA. Since 1990 there's been 3 rookies to tally 60 or more assists in a season and 4 to tally 40 more goals in a season. Those are cutoffs for top 15-20 players in each category.
You might enjoy it better, and that's cool. But the game is vastly better at the pro level.
It was a joke. Every time someone brings up the NBA that's one of the first comments. I enjoyed the passionate critiques to my comment though.
Definitely a kick and I'm as surprised as you at how many disagree. Coleman knew what he was doing.
The thing is, it might (might, not definitive) have gone in even without the kick.
Agreed. This was not a simple deflection off a hockey stop, he crossed over and sideways kicked it in. Bad break for the Flames but the right call.
Silly move on the kick because it looked like the puck was going in on its own.
who else but Connor McDavid to end it in OT! If this is Johnny Gaudreau’s last game as a Calgary Flame does Stevie Y show him the $$$?
Isn’t he 30 years old now? Johnny is gonna want a 6 year deal at $11-13MM a year, no thanks.
The wings have way too much to rebuild, thank investing a huge chunk of their cap into one guy doesn’t make sense.
After watching the Wings this year, I think I pushed back their playoff contending status from 1-2 years to 3 years, at a minimal. They currently have one legit starter on Defense (assuming Stall doesn’t resign) and crap for a 2/3 line that provides legitimate and consistent scoring.
This is such a critical off-season for Stevie and the direction of this team. First step, sign a home run of a coach.
Turns 29 just before the next season starts.
A lot hinges on who the new coach is and the fit with the current roster, but I think the Wings are closer than people realize to being a playoff team.
Simon Edvinsson should be with the Wings next year, giving them a pair of high end, young defensemen and significantly improving the unit. Sign another defenseman (or bring Staal back) and that’s a much better group.
The Wings also just signed a young Swede forward that was runner up for rookie of the year in the Swedish league. Signing another forward (like Gaudreau as an example) and a full year of a healthy Vrana and this forward group looks much improved as well. A full year of healthy Vrana is huge for the scoring potential of this team. 13 goals in 26 games this past year had him on pace to be a 40 goal scorer and he now has 21 in 37 total games with the Wings. So expecting a full year Vrana to be a 35-40 goal scorer isn’t crazy at all, which is huge coming from your second line.
A fresh face behind the bench should bring a new energy to the team and have them pushing for a playoff spot. Depending on any free agent signings, I can see them in the playoffs next year. Doesn’t mean they will, but I can see them anywhere from 6-10 in the conference depending on additions and health.
Soderblom is the crafty young LW who also happens to be 6’8" and 248". I wouldn’t mind seeing him on the 3rd line. I like a top line of Gaudreau-Larkin-Raymond. Moving Bertuzzi to 2nd line boosts their scoring ability with Fabbri and Vrana. The mix of young D-men and a vet FA can’t make them worse on the blue line than last season. And we still have Kampfer under contract thru ‘23! i forgot he was a Red Wing.
Gotta get the coach and I have faith in Stevie, that’s the team he built making a run to a possible 3rd straight Stanley. If it takes a couple years to make the playoffs so be it, but I think Johnny Hockey can give us a boost, at the ripe ole age of 28 he’s coming off a career 40 goal season w/75 assists, a PLUS 64! I don’t think the Wings are that far off, they and the Pistons are closest to turning it around. At least the Wings have a GM that’s not in perpetual rebuild like Al Avila-sad.
Pontus Andreasson is actually the young Swede I was referring to above. Finished 2nd in the Swedish league in rookie scoring. Undrafted but signed with the Wings recently
I have not seen much of McDavid but wow is he worth the price of admission. Size, speed, incredible moves and change of direction. Small sample size for me but he looks like he could be better than Sidney Crosby for one. Any better comps?
He's better right now than Crosby ever was at his peak. Crosby does the small things extremely well, always has. Super smart player who puts himself in the right position and is better without the puck, than with it. McDavid is a better skater, a better puck handler and does it all at an incredible speed.
He gets the puck on his stick and everyone stands, for a reason. Also great away from the puck, like Crosby, it's as if it just finds him. He also has been incredible at pivoting off of checks which creates opportunities that not many others are able to do.
Did you miss the thread the other day where some were saying he’s in the realm of Gretzky/Mario good?
He's the best since and I think he's the only one who's come close.
I know I'm going out on a limb here and assuming Colorado wins the series, but that Edmonton-Colorado series is going to be a doozie. Its all lining up for some fantastic series to end the season, especially if you end it with either Colorado-Tampa or Edmonton-Tampa. Just star power all over the place.
Zach Hyman is having an incredible playoffs and doing everything the Oilers need him to do to be successful. Hyman, a former Leaf, is exactly the type of player the Leafs need.
Calgary has no answer for him.
They just can't break Hyman.
