WVU vs. UNC: Meineke Car Care Bowl

Submitted by Magnus on
Is anybody else watching the Meineke Car Care Bowl game between UNC and WVU? I care about this game for a couple reasons: 1) I'm interested in what UNC is doing, because Butch Davis is doing a good job of recruiting and I'm wondering what the buzz is all about. 2) I'm looking for similarities and differences between Rodriguez/Magee's offense and Stewart/Mullen's offense. 3) I'm watching the 3-3-5. So far I'm not impressed with the 3-3-5. UNC is doing a good job of exploiting the edges with outside runs and misdirection. They're pretty solid up the middle, though. I'm wondering if Michigan might recruit different types of players to play strong safety. The WVU strong safeties look a little undersized, even though they're listed at 200+ pounds. Players like Brandon Smith and Isaiah Bell and Mike Jones seem like they might be able to play that strong safety position but be a little stronger against the run. I'd prefer to see them attack downhill rather than wait for the runner to get to them. Just thinking out loud... It's only the beginning of the second quarter, so I'll see more in the next hour or two.

the same reasons. Casteel and his gameplan are not very impressive. Yates and company are shreading the WVU defense. On the positive side, the WVU offense seems to have many options. The commentators keep referring to WVU as trying to pass more and it is certainly working today. The 3-3-5 seems to not put much pressure on the QB, a problem we saw this past year. Not sure if it's personell or scheme.

I've noticed the lack of pressure on the QB as well. I think UNC has done a good job of moving the pocket and using misdirection, so perhaps Casteel is trying not to get his players out of position. On a side note, is it just a coincidence that your screen name is the name of the a capella group at Michigan?

is flat out awesome....he's one of the reasons why I am watching. Been traveling all day, just got home....looks like I missed some awesome action..... The main reasons I am watching is because I am a college football addict (like most of us around here) and I have 3 bills on UNC +2. Long, long, long way to go in this one. WVA on the move, down 6.

FEI liked North Carolina much more - granted, this may be related to a wholesale overvaluing of the ACC this year by FEI - and I had UNC pretty high on my (cash-free) confidence pool for bowl games. Hearing about lines like that almost make me consider taking up gambling. ALMOST.

My god, was that an awful play call on 4th and 1. Of course, it seems like they have no ability to play power football at all. And Pat White didn't see a receiver standing all alone with no one within 10 yards of him either. Bailed out by a quick turnover though.

Stewart's offense isn't really that similar aside from the players running the offense and that it's a spread. The better comparison will be next season. If I'm not mistaken the play calling ended up being nearly 50-50 run-pass.

I'd disagree. I'd say its a very similar offense, just with more experienced personnel playing. The offense we saw this year was fitted within the system with the lowest common denominator at qb and ol. If we had a junior or senior capable of passing like Pat White did (at least today), we would have passed closer to 50-50 as well.

I would suggest that you might want to do some homework before you disagree with me based on your watching of one game. I've watched almost every WVU game for the past 4 years. A lot of the plays are the same, but it's not the same offense, starting with the overall playcalling scheme right down to the utilization of certain positions. Stewart's offense has thrown the ball substantially more often than Rodriguez ever did at WVU (with the possible exception of the Lewis season); mind you this is with that exact same capable "junior or senior" quarterback that Stewart has. Again, I have to ask, why is it so hard for some people to understand that RR's offense is a running offense? It's not a hard concept. If you think that with Pat White at Michigan RR would have passed closer to 50-50 (1) you are nuts and (2) history doesn't support your opinion.

1) I've been watching WVU fairly consistently since about 2003. My opinion is not based off one game. 2) There was a misunderstanding of my "closer to 50-50" comment. I mean this in terms of closer in respect to the 75% of plays and 70% of yardage seasons in Pat White's freshman year as compared to his senior year. I do not mean we will get exactly half and half yardage and play calling. Like any other coach, I expect Rodriguez to increase the percentage of passing as a quarterback develops. That is what I am stating. Even with Pat White, last year WVU's yardage was about 58-42 in favor of the run, dramatically different from 65-35 and 70-30 ratios the previous two years with an underclassman Pat White. 3) If anything you and history supported my opinion that if we had a veteran quarterback, especially a passer (such as your example of Lewis), Rodriguez would run a more balanced (is that better nomenclature for you?) offensive scheme. With Lewis, Rodriguez ran an offense that was 52-48 in favor of the run. And as I said, even Pat White became more balanced under Rodriguez. I'd tie something in about this season's balance, but I feel there are too many circumstances that would have made any offense inept. 4) As far as the differences in offense, I think the x's and o's are similar to a far extent, its the jimmies and joes that is the big difference. I think Stewart bought a little too hard to the thought that White should pass more. Even with that attempt to pass more, play calling for WVU from a rush vs pass standpoint was pretty on par for yardage. They ended the season with a yardage ration of 62-38. Play calling was down to its lowest point in recent WVU history, but most of the games with high numbers of attempts came against Villanova, UNC, and Cinncy. UNC and Cinncy were two close games that WVU was behind in most of the game. UNC was running large chunks of the clock out, WVU had to score quick. Cinncy was just a straight up battle from behind. Villanova is a joke and it was the first game of the season when the "Let Pat Pass" meme was still going strong. If Rodriguez would have stayed at WVU, would we have seen a similar offensive scheme as Stewart ran. No one here, in this thread, said with Pat White we would have run a balanced offense. I don't believe that. No one should. We don't have the OL to support him, much less the WRs. If anything Pat White would have made us more run heavy. This year we ended up around 58% run calls for just a shade over 50% of our actual yardage. But in the long run, of course there are difference in the offenses, but its because of who we have playing, not the system. That was my initial argument (admittedly vague). I digress... To close, I think there was an error in nomenclature you disagreed with me about. If that is not correct, then I think you are wrong, and I hope the above clarifies my opinion on the subject.
