World Cup Day 8 Open Thread
World Cup Day 8 is here. I never want this World Cup to end. England/Uruguay is the big matchup today but I suspect Columbia/Cote d'Ivoire will be a very competitive match.
Group C
Columbia - Cote d'Ivoire 12pm EDT (ESPN / Univision / Watch ESPN)
Group D
Uruguay - England 3pm EDT (ESPN / Univision / Watch ESPN)
Group C
Japan - Greece 6pm EDT (ESPN / Univision / Watch ESPN)
Let's go Uruguay
Cuadrado is causing all sorts of issues on the right for CIT. Columbia looking dangerous early.
Yeah, he's very good. I always like that Italian Lowly Worm looking dude too.
CIV needs Drogba out there. They did nothing without him in their first game and aren't doing much without him today.
Think Drogba can only go for about a half hour at this level at this point in his career. And this game's being played at a pretty high pace.
You nailed that right on the head - Drogba in right at the hour.
After Gutierrez's first half, I hope Jackson Martinez comes in after the break.
Here he comes...Quintero is Columbia's biggest young talent. I'm looking forward to seeing him in the World Cup.
Whoa. Bony totally spurns a free header from 6 yards for a crazy attempt at a spinning overhead kick.
Columbia hits the post after Cuadrado burns the defense.
Here comes Drogba.
Breaks the deadlock on a great header off the corner.
And then the dancing. Sweet, sweet Columbian dancing. I'll be scouring the internets for that GIF in a minute.
That's what I was excited to see Quintero.
I have seen that given as hand ball. Huge no call by Webb and now CIV is down two.
if it strikes the arm outside the frame of the body--or I guess what I'm trying to say is if it wouldn't have struck him if he didn't have an arm--it's a penalty. That gets called in Italy without a doubt. In England, no.
but FIFA is definitely moving away from calling everything that touches the arms and hands a foul. The ref's job is figure out intent and where an arm is "natually". You can not say what would happen if he didn't have an arm (unless the player really has no arms). If you have ever stood in a wall and had a guy drill you, you have no reaction time from 10 yards. Unless you unnaturally "make yourself bigger" and/or put your arms at face level or higher it's hard to justify a handling the ball. Most guys jump up and turn to save their bodies. Is it 100% black and white? No, but I would agree there is no intent to gain advantage in this case.
Looks like many refs in the WC are having this exact conversation with the players in the wall BEFORE the free kick is taken.
As a ref this is probably the biggest bitch I get from parents. Every time it hits a hand and I don't blow the whistle someone goes ape shit.
A ref has to grow a pair of balls and call the game the right way, and not determine the outcome of the game because they are afraid of being yelled at by people who don't understand the rules.
I don't think Italian referees call these plays the way they do because they don't have balls, or because they're afraid of being yelled at.
His elbow was outside the frame of his body; the ball would have whistled past him if his arm hadn't been in the way. He didn't move his elbow to the ball but there was no reason for it to be out there in the first place except to extend the end of the wall an extra few inches. He "made himself big."
Wow, what a goal by Gervinho. This has been an excellent second half.
Looks like a completely different player since joining Roma. 2-1 Columbia...well done from him to stay on his feet after that tackle and convert.
Lineups below for the 3pm EDT kickoff:
Uruguay:
Muslera, Godin (c), Pereira, Rodriguez, Suarez, Gimenez, Lodeiro, Arevalo, Gonzalez, Cavani, Caceres
England:
Hart, Johnson, Baines, Gerrard (c), Cahill, Jagielka, Sturridge, Rooney, Welbeck, Henderson, Sterling
Godin captains Uruguay as Diego Lugano is injured.
Quintaro almost scores from 50 yards.
Counting the Euros watching Quintero right now.
Oh man - the Drogba of a few years ago probably gets to that ball and scores.
Go Uruguay, I love when the english melt down.
After watching in the shocking moments of the world cup how they whine about Wayne Rooney shaving his chest I'm through with them, for them this is a soap opera and they're the only deserving team so I'm fine if they lose all three matches, although it'd be awesome if they lost to Costa Rica....
Robert Green?
English keepers are the epitome of clumsiness.
Sorry--been on a call...what minute did this happen? Was it a foul or handball?
This guy will lose the game soon.
I wouldn't say it was a goal scoring oportunity, they were outside the box and all the defenders were in their position.
Yeah I saw it...looked like it should have been a second yellow on Godin. That captain's armband and the ref's gutlessness might have saved him.
several bad to iffy calls / no calls lately have gone their way.
Suárez! to insult the injury, nice play.
Poor Rooney. Poor England.
Of course Suarez puts Uruguay ahead...hasn't played in five weeks and BOOM.
