2014 FIFA World Cup
As you may have guessed from my avatar and frequent Ricky Bobby/Anchorman references - I am kind of a fan of Will Ferrell.
Well the legend of Will Ferrell (and my admiration) keeps on growing. Mr. Ferrell crashed a party in Brasil and gave an inspiring speech. One full of teeth and biting wit. Thought it was funny and sharing in the positive vibes after advancing from the Group of Death.
And yes, I used Brasil. /s
Day 14 of the World Cup is upon us with four matches to determine Groups E and F. I added the Group Standings below as it will give you a better idea of the implications of each match.
Nigeria - Argentina (ESPN)
Bosnia and Herzegovina - Iran (ESPN2)
A draw is all Argentina needs to win the group outright. However, if Iran beat B&H and Nigeria (edit) lose to Argentina, Iran would have a chance to move into the round of 16 (with Goal Differential help).
Ecuador - France (ESPN)
Honduras - Switzerland (ESPN2)
France are almost a sure bet to win the group unless they lose big time to Ecuador AND the Swiss win big over Honduras. Ecuador are in second only on Goal Differential so both matches in this group should be outstanding today.
Welcome to Day 13 of the World Cup. We have the conclusion of Group C and Group D today. The highlight of today’s schedule is Uruguay and Italy, fighting for second place in Group D.
Costa Rica – England (ESPN2)
Italy – Uruguay (ESPN)
Costa Rica is improbably through to the knockout stages. England, of course, is not. Uruguay needs a win to move on whereas Italy needs only a draw due to Goal Differential.
Greece – Cote d’Ivoire (aka Ivory Coast) (ESPN2)
Japan – Columbia (ESPN)
If Cote d’Ivoire wins, they’re through to the final 16 for the first time in their history. If they draw and Japan beat Columbia by more than two goals, Japan would go through. Columbia will likely rest some of their normal starter’s as they are through into the Knockout Stage.
We have come to the final match of the Group Stage for Groups A and B. Matches this week are 12pm EDT and 4pm EDT and are played simultaneously.
Netherlands - Chile 12pm EDT (ESPN)
Spain - Australia 12pm EDT (ESPN2)
Spain and Australia are both eliminated. Chile and The Netherlands are tied at 6 points but the Dutch hold a one goal advantage on differential.
Mexico - Croatia 4pm EDT (ESPN)
Brazil - Cameroon 4pm EDT (ESPN2)
Cameroon has been eliminated. Brazil is atop the group on Goal Differential (+2) but tied with Mexico at 4 points.
Mexico is through with a win or draw. If Croatia win, they will pass Mexico and will be into the knockout stage.
World Cup Day 8 is here. I never want this World Cup to end. England/Uruguay is the big matchup today but I suspect Columbia/Cote d'Ivoire will be a very competitive match.
Columbia - Cote d'Ivoire 12pm EDT (ESPN / Univision / Watch ESPN)
Uruguay - England 3pm EDT (ESPN / Univision / Watch ESPN)
Japan - Greece 6pm EDT (ESPN / Univision / Watch ESPN)
Everyone recovered sufficiently? What a night for the USMNT. Here we go on Day 6:
Belgium - Algeria 12pm EDT (ESPN / Univision / Watch ESPN)
Brazil - Mexico 3pm EDT (ESPN / Univision / Watch ESPN)
Russia - Korea Republic 6pm EDT (ESPN / Univision / Watch ESPN)
