What is with all the Offsides Penalties??

One of the things that drove me the most crazy about the Indiana loss was how incredibly jumpy the Michigan defense was. I think they jumped offsides like 5 times and were close to jumping offsides a few additional times. I've never seen a game where a football team was so bad about staying onside. Is it that hard to watch the ball and wait for it to be snapped? And how does Don Brown not fix this after it happened in the MSU game a few times and started happening again early against Indiana?? Maybe he is emphasizing this, but the players aren't listening, or are too young and inexperienced. I don't know. But this just seems very basic, and it was embarrassing to see the Michigan defense keep making those mistakes.

The secondary can’t cover, so the QB is getting the ball out too quickly for the pressure to get there. So the D is trying to jump snaps to try and get the pressure there a hair quicker.

I noticed it quite a few times on rewatches and film snippets posted on Twitter. The DEs especially are beating the tackles very fast. Can’t beat them any quicker. But the QB is able to get the pass off because the corners either aren’t covering or are grabbing receivers and the QB just throws it up. There’s simply no time to get to the QB with a normal pass rush, even an elite one. Jumping the snap would give an extra edge, but as we saw it comes with risks and STILL may not work

Also explains such high pass rush grades (with no production) from the DEs against MSU, and it’s a trend we’ll probably see again with the UFR this week.

I think it's easy to understand. The D is being told "you gotta get to the QB!". They also know that if they don't, the CBs are going to get torched. So, you're constantly pressing and on edge, instead of relaxed and playing hard knowing you'll win your matchups. Even worse, they just might not be that good, but feel a pressure to deliver.

I'm reminded of when I played high school basketball. Was I very good? No. Maybe ok. One time I had to cover the other team's best player for a bit. Man did I become a lot worse of a player. I couldn't keep up w/ the guy. So I grabbed him, fouled him, did anything to try to keep up. It didn't work very well, Even on offense I couldn't do a thing either because I just knew I was outclassed and pressing so much on defense.

We're just not very good. It is crazy how most teams in the Big Ten seem to have better defensive lines than Michigan. I mean, even stupid Wisconsin will find some 350lb nose tackle and force teams to double the guy up. What the fuck is this program doing with its recruiting?

Our players are tight, on edge, and pressing to try to make a big play because not only do they have to overcome their opponent but also their own coaching staff.
