We Recruited Tebow?!

Submitted by MaizeHornet on
So I was wandering aimlessly through Rivals.com yesterday, when I came to Tim Tebow's page. I was curious to see who recruited him back in 2005 (part of the 2006 recruiting class), and suprisingly, Michigan was on his list of schools, was offered a scholarship and took a visit. Does anyone know how serious he was in coming to Michigan? Was Michigan on his top five list? Maybe this is old news but I never knew about this until a few days ago. Here's the link: http://rivals100.rivals.com/viewprospect.asp?Sport=1&pr_key=31436 At least we got David Cone...haha

would be our current efforts with Reuben Randle. But its been a while. I just remember having the clear understanding that even though we had been mentioned and gotten a visit, it would have been a big upset if we landed him.

It's exactly what you read. We were on his brain, but not alone. The coaches kinda knew earlier on he was staying south. Not like we were down to the wire.

were the only schools he seriously considered. I'm glad he didn't go to UM. His hall of fame career would have been replaced with one that peaked as a freshman in an archaic offense.

One of the early nails in Mike Shula's coffin was that he put all of his efforts into getting Tim Tebow, who was pretty much considered a lock for Florida all along. Tebow's recruitment was chronicled on an MTV show I think. Anyway, Shula didn't get him and soon after he was canned. I think Tebow's dad went to Florida or something, so he was never really in play for other schools. I was also struck by the fact that we recruited Matt Leinart pretty hard. It came down to us and USC and he stayed in state.

I believe at the time it wasn't somuch of a loss because the summer of 05 Ryan *Big Tex* Mallet came to camp an WoW everyone with his gunslinger arm. However, he wasn't the number one quarterback cruit Michigan was looking at. Iirc, Mitch Mustain was the bigger fish everyone wanted. He went back and forth with ND and Ark before deceiding on the Hogs...the rest is history.

Michigan set its sights on Mallett very early in the process. Mustain was not someone Michigan zoned in on, and they did get the better of the two based on the recruiting services. The only QB with more hype than Mallett was Clausen.

I'm pretty sure the first SHIRTLESS quote was in reference to Tebow, because Brian had him on the radar as one of our recruits. I think someone's google search for "TIM TEBOW SHIRTLESS" showed up in mgoblog's google analytics.

a couple of my friends on the team hosted him and said he was a pretty good guy (did you know that he is a missionary? omg who knew). anyway, when they tried taking him out he didn't really want to and wouldn't dare take a sip of beer they thought he was a bit weird. anyway, that's my premium insider info on tebow and his visit to michigan.
