WBB vs SIUE game notes

Submitted by jplwhite on November 30th, 2023 at 7:08 AM

Opponent: Southern Illinois University Edwardsville

Result: Win 103-59

Date:  11/29, Home

Starters: Laila Phelia, Cam Williams, Taylor Williams, Jordan Hobbs, Lauren Hansen (same as last 5 games)

Injuries/inactives: none, everyone played by the start of the second quarter

Offense:

  • Two jump balls caused by SIUE on Michigan’s end in the first two minutes led to KBA subbing Cam Williams, Hobbs, Taylor Williams and going with a smaller lineup for a while
  • Stuck scored 6 of the first 8 points
    • Assist from Hansen as Stuck crashed the lane for a layup and one
    • Open 3
  • Regained the lead for good with 3:30 left in the first quarter off back-to-back Crockett threes
  • Hobbs (3-3), Hansen(2-4), Brown (2-3), Kampschroeder (2-5) also all hit multiple threes
  • Phelia did not score until the fourth quarter
  • Sollom struggling with putbackss, 5 offensive rebounds but only 4 points on 2-5 shooting

Defense:

  • SIUE was getting clean shots early in the game and had a 4 point lead with 5:30 left in the first quarter
  • Phelia in foul trouble defending shots, had 4 by the middle of third quarter and only played 17 minutes
  • Michigan was fouling (20) and turning it over (16) quite a bit, but was offset by SIUE’s effort to do the same (19 fouls and 19 turnovers)

Notable stats:

  • Team finished at 56% from three, with 14-25 shooting
  • Macy Brown had 12 points on 22 minutes along with 3 assists and 3 steals
  • Alyssa Crockett shot 4-6 from three, finishing with 16 points
  • I read/heard somewhere that Hansen is leading the team in assists this season, which is true. She had 5 in this game and 18 on the season. Hobbs is right behind her with 15.

Overall:

  • Struggled early, but put it together behind stellar bench play and three point shooting. The bench scored 67 of the team’s points and also played a majority of the minutes, as no starter got over 20.

Miscellaneous:

  • These Peloton challenges during commercial breaks really suck. What is supposed to be entertaining about walking lunges? Give me a poorly played game of tic-tac-toe any day.
  • First game over 100 points since November 18, 2016 against Howard. Jillian Dunston was a starter and Naz was not on the team yet.

Thanks as always for the good write-up!

There were some really extended bench lineup minutes tonight, and those lineups had much better +/- numbers.

I was using this game to do some testing with a scorekeeping app for my daughter's team. I only kept score for the first half, but the bench lineups were much better in the first half.

  • Brett/Brown/Crockett/Woodson/Stuck (all bench) were +6
  • Brett/Brown/Crockett/Woodson/Evans (all bench) were +5
  • Brett/Hansen/Hobbs/Sollom/Stuck (Hobbs, Hansen + bench) were +4
  • Brown/Hobbs/Kampschroeder/Crockett/Evans (Hobbs + bench) were +5
  • Brown/Phelia/Kampschroeder/Crockett/Stuck (Phelia + bench) were +3
  • Brown/Kampschroeder/Crockett/Woodson/Stuck (all bench) were +1
  • Starting line up was -3. Woof.
  • Phelia was +1.
  • Crockett was +22 in 10 minutes in the first half. She had a very good game.
  • Macy Brown was also +22 in 10 minutes in the first half.
  • Brett was +15, Evans was +14, and Woodson was +12.
  • Altogether, starters played 25 of 100 available minutes in the first half, but the score was still 50-28 at halftime.

Random thoughts:

  • I'm starting to like Hansen at the 1 spot. She seems to have a good handle on the ball, doesn't get rattled, and if you push her on ball too much she is not afraid to (and is able to) get to the rim for a layup.
  • Sollom has to hit those layups. She missed a few, and one them robbed Greta of a heck of an assist. Sollom does continue to be a good passer out of the post, though, and found Greta for a cutting reverse layup later to make up for it.
  • The stadium has been so empty. I know these are games against nobodies, but it bums me out that the success KBA has had has not translated to more butts in the stadium on a consistent basis. Personally, we're 2-2.5 hours away and can only make a handful of games each year (and never on weeknights). We haven't been able to make any yet this year, but we're hoping to catch some soon.

I wanted to do the burpee challenge. Two games ago they did a push-up challenge and this young kid knocked out almost 30 push ups in 30 s with the 2nd place not far behind. It was impressive.

Michigan got smacked by Ole Miss despite Phelia scoring 21. If she has an off night against a better competition, I would not have much faith in Michigan winning much less get within a single digit. It's a mediocre Michigan team with a lot of flaws. Poor PG play with little depth, not much inside scoring and bad shooting from the 3s.
