The Vig: Week 0

Submitted by canzior on August 25th, 2021 at 9:59 AM

Football starts on Saturday!

Nebraska -7 at Illinois

Hawaii +18 at UCLA

One thing I hear a lot from experienced gamblers is to take the home dog to cover.

Can Illinois keep it within a touchdown?  That Nebraska offense is soooo bad, and I don’t believe they have anyone who knows how to catch.

I gave one last look at some season win totals and few jumped out.

Cincinnati: They play 2 games vs ranked opponents, ND & Indiana, in week 3 and 4.

ND: If they beat 1 of USC, UNC, Cincinnati or Wisconsin, they’ll win 9 games.

North Carolina: Doesn’t play Clemson, only Miami & ND are ranked on their schedule.

Miami: 2 ranked teams, Bama & UNC..next toughest game…at Pitt?  At FSU??

Indiana: Assume losses to OSU and Iowa.  Need to win 4 vs Cincinnati, Michigan, MSU, Maryland, Minnesota, PSU.

Tennessee: Wins are BG, Tenn Tech, S Alabama, Vandy.  If they can win 3 of Kentucky, S Carolina, Mizzou, and Pitt they cover… with losses to Bama, Georgia, Florida & Ole Miss.

Good Luck!

Have tickets to Tenn v. BG but only going if Milton gets the starting nod.  Really hope he can put it all together and do well.  UT has a lot of talent, although everyone expects some significant growing pains.

I did take the over on Tenn for the season.  I took BG +33 just too big a line for a new coaching staff and the first game.

If we are talking about Pitt and FSU being the next toughest games on Miami's schedule, I think you would have to include MSU in there as well. I know they aren't expected to be good but they did bring in 14 scholarship transfers this year with many of them being previously at P5 schools.

Add in the fact that Miami's first three games are to get killed by Bama, play App State who has been one of the better G5 programs and then MSU and that's a pretty tough stretch. MSU is also playing FCS Youngstown State the week before heading down to Miami.

I saw that, but transfers will take time to gel, they still have no quarterback, Miami is very talented and probably most importantly it's a home game for the Canes.

They have played well but don't have any wins above their weight class in the last couple years.  They beat UNC in 2019 early in the season with a new coach. They lost to both ranked teams they played last year (CCU & Louisiana).  I think they'll hang for a half, then the wheels will fall off.

I'm not sold on the 'Canes.  I also remember when a promising FSU team had their 2017 season completely derailed by playing 'Bama opening week and losing Francois for the rest of the year.  There are other examples - Michigan, Louisville, USC-  Bad things happen when you open the season against 'Bama.

I don't see how that Alabama team derailed Michigan in 2012. The rest of the season they lost three close games and that awful game against Nebraska when Denard got hurt.

If anything derailed them that debacle at Nebraska did. I felt that a healthy Denard starting at QB could have beaten Ohio State that year; he had 122 yards playing more or less at running back when Borges didn't have the sense to use him as a decoy.

What is "the Vig"?

Also, +1 for the Maverick gif.  Loved Jodie Foster in that movie.  Garner was phenomenal and Gibson didn't disappoint.

Morrie: Fuck 'em in the ear. Fuck 'em in the other ear, that son of a bitch. Did I ever bust his balls? Did I ever drop the dime on Jimmy?

Henry Hill: Drop the dime? What are you talking here? You know Jimmy Conway, you borrowed his money. Pay him so we can get the fuck outta here.

Morrie: I never agreed to 3 points on top of the vig! Am I something special? Some sort of schmuck on wheels?
