UM Offense you would like to see...

Submitted by I Luv TDs on
I understand there is talk behind the scenes among coaches on which type of spread UM should run next season. Should they go run heavy like they did at WVU with Denard or do more of a Texas Tech passing offense with Tate. With each offense being based on the strength of each qb what offense would you like to see in 2010?

I'm not an expert but I thought the blocking by the Tech wr's who didn't catch the ball was excellent. They had their defenders fully engaged and held the block until the ball carrier was by them. It was kind of eye opening to watch those plays by Tech seemingly almost always go for at least 5 yds, if not closer to 10, and then remember all the times that UM tried to run something similiar only for it to get blown at the line of scrimmage.

RR did change a lot for that season, regardless of what the idiots in the press say. His last WVU team ran the ball 74% of the time. In 2008, we ran it 54%. A fairly significant difference, no? But even if you believe that he ran the exact same offense, one could argue that he was entitled to, coming off all the success he had at WVU. Now he's coming off two uncharacteristically poor seasons, so I'd imagine he'll be more inclined to make changes.

It seemed to get 10 yards every time and seems to be a perfect play for for RR's offense that any QB should be able throw. Baby steps. I'd like to see that play.

you have to let the defenses you are facing dictate what kind of offense you are going to run. You need a little versatility and i do believe RR understands this. Once he has the personnel he needs in place, i think he will do exactly this. The man is not stupid after all. He realizes that if an opposing team is very strong in one area, he should attack another area. Offense is generally about attacking defensive weaknesses ie the path of least resistence. Commiting to one way or another only makes it easier for defenses to scheme against you.

I love TT offense...all the short routes, crossing routes, screens make up for a ton of YAC. The WR screens are like a running play and they execute them perfectly. Gotta love the Welker like WR...Small, fast and built. just exciting to watch.

I would like to see more passing throughout the game as well. The passing I would like to see though based on more complex routes. A lot of Michigan's passing routes were basic routes with very little crossing routes or back field motions that give Michigan the better match up. The spread is a balancing act and Michigan does not have to personnel to run it effectively yet. Hopefully with some healthy players, and more experience the playbook can expand to include something more than a 4 yard out route or a screen.

In response to the OP, I think with Tate's skill set they should do something in between the zone read and the Tech offense. Something ideal would be similar to Gary Pinkel's offense at Missouri or what Mangino did with Reesing at Kansas. Tate has made the wrong read in the option several times, so I'm not opposed to more of a pass based offense. With DG coming in, they should obviously run more of a run option style offense.
