It's a felony to take a cell phone? DA must be a USC fan.

but the monetary threshhold for grand larceny is normally pretty low.

Why wouldn't grand larceny just mean anything worth over a grand in value? Sigh.

Apparently the statute he's getting hit under is it's a felony to rob transportation individuals. So Bus Drivers, Taxi Drivers, Uber, and Lyft are all pretty spectacularly stupid people to rob in California.
Not sure if it's a straight up robbery, looking a lot like the driver did something with the phone that Adams objected to and he tried to take it(while drunk at 3:30 in the morning). Facts still have to come out and no matter what this was dumb, but I don't think this was like the Utah CB's Craigslist spree from earlier.

If that's true, he might have a case. He's not a public figure and is entitled to privacy.

Absolutely stupid.

That sounds similar to the laws in Michigan which make it a felony to rob utility workers, which I believe some other states have. Certain professions really don't need to be any more dangerous than they already can be, in my own opinion - I think that applies to transit workers too, or at least I believe so.
In moment though, I went to Bruins Nation and they don't have much more to add, so we're probably in a holding pattern on this one until he appears in Los Angeles Superior Court, I imagine. The Daily Bruin also mentioned that the driver supposedly reported minor injuries too, so we'll see if that plays into it as well. EIther way, in front of UCPD headquarters? Yikes.

Should he be punished? I like my job too, and if I were arrested I'm pretty sure my boss would still make me come to work Saturday.

assuming no aggravating conditions, beatings, threats, bad rap sheet and that its in LA county, he'll get a misdemeanor PC 487(2) - which is theft from a person. jail time will be what is called 'credit time served', meaning he will get credit for the 3 days he did and be done. probation for a year possibly 2, and restitution to the victim.

He would have been better off being a MSU player and just brandishing a weapon during a road rage incident!

Wasn't that in a book once?

One strike down, two to go. In all seriousness, hopefully he learned his lesson and stops that foolishness

What did the Uber driver expect, he was called a scrapper and figher in the article.
Uber driver probably should have revved up the uber car to 88, and read this article earlier today, before deciding to pick up Ishmael.
