Hail to the Victors! 4 runs in the bottom of the 5th made it 8-0, Lauren Derkowski got the win.

» Ellie Sieler went 3-for-4 with two RBI, including the game-ending single to rightfield.
» Lauren Derkowski struck out four while allowing five hits and three walks en route to the complete-game shutout.

Derkowski & the Wolverines got out of a bases-loaded situation to preserve the shutout. Some aggressive baserunning took advantage of 4 Sparty noooos.

A 3-game weekend home series vs Northwestern is up next.

MGoBlue recap.

FYI, "B1G Trailblazers" featuring Carol Hutchins is on Sunday @ 11 AM ET on BTN, right before the noon game vs Northwestern (Fri & Sat games are on BTN :Plus).

Unfortunately for bragging rights, Sparty sits 14th in the Big Ten right now. Michigan is now done with an 8-game run against the expected 12-13-14 seeds, which are a combined 8-34 in the league - two of those victories coming against the Wolverines.

It's a rough season. The highly-touted freshmen on the roster aren't claiming starting spots, and losing Storako, who is putting together a reasonable candidacy for Player of the Year, to transfer has meant pitching isn't what it was in past seasons. The team has hardly any power at all and the defense isn't the strength it has been. Derkowski's development has been the bright spot - she might be all-league first-team. Blair might get a second-team spot and that's going to be it this season.

Still, they're not out of NCAA contention because of schedule strength. This weekend they host Northwestern - the only ranked Big Ten team. Winning that series would keep their at-large chances alive.

If you're going to see the team this season, this weekend is when they need the most support. Too bad the weather's going to be awful - they might be considering moving Sunday's game to a second game on Friday or Saturday, so watch for that.
