A Top 100 list for 2010 that we may like a little more
Sporting News just put out their 2010 Top 100:
http://www.sportingnews.com/yourturn/viewtopic.php?t=546476
Lattimore #1, Seastrunk #2, Henderson #3.
Of particular interest:
Ricardo Miller #26
Devin Gardner #31
Brennan Clay #40
William Gholston #54 (with a lazy rationale predicting that he'll sign for Michigan)
Owamagbe Odighizuwa #61 (I know nothing about him, but a member of the Barkevious Mingo All-Stars)
Marvin Robinson #90
Does this listing (4 in top 100, a few other possible gets) make people feel better about Michigan's recruiting? It shouldn't - the recruiting, no matter who is rating it, is going very well.
I'd still like to see UM grab some top defensive prospects, but that will come with time. I'm not worried right now.
Sports Talk Radio On Paper!
....it's not as if i have inside information, but I'm fairly confident the staff will be recruiting defense and O-line with emphasis for the next 8 months.
All wide receivers, all the time.
Hey they're quick enough to play the line.
Gardner is ranked #31.
I wonder why this ranking is so different compared to the Scout and Rivals rankings.
of the arbitrariness of these numbers, and the lack of need to worry about them. I prefer the determinations of the Michigan staff over some Rivals, Scout or Sporting News staffer sent to Inkster to watch Gardner play.
Sporting News is in Love with Ricardo and Devin. They were both on their top ten recruits to watch of 2010 list. I'm really happy that they SN is so high on some of our recruits. I like SN and read it every day.
considering that they are comparing him to a QB in another state that an entirely different random guy rated.
bookmark this thread. Because I have a feeling that sooner or later you're going to post something that suggests the exact opposite sentiment.
...prefer the determination of Rivals, Scout and Sporting News over the Michigan football coaching staff? I'm pretty sure I won't say that.
you'll never pine for some player ranked in the top 50 and question why we're not recruiting them. Because after all, thats the coaching staff's decision too.
If we disagree with them, what is their use? We only seem to believe them when they agree with our personal rankings.
RIVALS now has Gardner at #2 dual-threat QB.
Where do you see that? Looking at this link, it seems that Rivals ranks Gardner as the #6 dual threat QB.

the list you were looking at is just in alphabetical order. this is the ranked list:

Our favorite QB Munchie Legaux ranks #5 above Robert Bolden. Regardless of his funny name, he would be a huge get as the second QB for our class.
I would much rather see us get Jeffrey Godfrey. He's probably the best passer out of all of the dual threats. His height is the only thing keeping him from being a top 100 recruit. With Devin Gardner's size I think Godfrey would be the perfect compliment.
When it comes to quarterbacks, you don't need a "complement." There's only one on the field at the same time. Receivers need complements (you need a position guy and a downfield threat), running backs need complements (you need a big play guy and a short yardage guy), etc.
Quarterbacks need to be good. Period.
I didn't realize Sporting News ranked recruits. Do they have a past, and any credibility in this sphere?
...are you looking for? And I'm not sure a "past" matters - neither Rivals nor Scout has been around for more than about ten years, right?
10 years > 1 year
but also sometimes guys write articles like these after talking to recruiting services, vs. guys like Lemming (not saying he's good or bad) who see everyone and then put their lists out. I would give more cred to someone around a few years, or who had a track record to look at.
I read a book by Stewart Mandel entitled "Bowls, Polls, and Tattered Souls". In one chapter, called "Invasion of the Recruiting Geeks", he has some strong accusations, mostly based on quotes from former FSU star Myron Rolle, such as that Lemming tries to steer players towards Notre Dame. Not sure if this is news to anyone.
Regardless, the book is a great read, and it's nestled safely on my toilet.
But yea, lemming is evil.
They have an article that begins with this caveat (emphasis mine):
"When the microphones and cameras are turned off, recruiting "experts" openly admit there isn't an exact science to choosing the top high school football players in the nation. Coaches share opinions and game film offers evidence, but it's wildly subjective. We're ready to join the fun."
I got it from their daily email newsletter Sporting News Today. It's free and it has a pretty nice layout in case you've never seen it. Beats giving espn hits anyway...

obviously the best recruiting site because they rate our commitments higher than other sites. In 2009 I had Rivals as the best with Scout second and ESPN third. This year it's SN, Scout, Rivals, and ESPN.
Although, I can't wait to see who my favorite is next April...
I hope the #32 kid goes to Texas. It'd be cool to have Mack Brown coaching Mack Brown.
...as Rich Rodriguez coaching Mack Brown.
