Tony Grimes not returning to Ole Miss in '11
He was suspended back in November for a violation of team rules. He started one game for the rebels this season. Hopefully he ends up somewhere. I really wanted him in maize and blue last year, but it appears better that he didnt with everything that has happened with this program recently.

OT baby.

College football is not off topic. Nor is any college athletic that Michigan competes in (or will one day compete in as in M Lax).

He almost picked Michigan last year, a lot of people pretty much considered him blue for a long time. Maybe OT since he doesn't actually play for us, but it's pretty fresh on a lot of our minds.

Its slightly OT, but can we let the mods mod? fucking christ.

And this was a kid critics pointed to as a faliure in recruiting by Rich Rod, because he concentrated to much on Dorsey.
December 19th, 2010 at 11:20 AM ^
He's also a kid who outperformed all the other cornerbacks we pulled in except Courtney Avery. And yeah, I'd take a small contribution from a freshman Grimes over a non-contribution/shitstorm from Demar Dorsey's recruitment any day.

more of a casualty of the Dorsey recruitment than Grimes?
December 19th, 2010 at 11:52 AM ^
It seemed like it. From what I heard, the coaches stopped going hard after Tony Grimes awhile before NSD. But Rashad Knight was still considering Michigan very late in the process. And on top of that, you never know how much the recruitment of Demar Dorsey had an effect on Sean Parker's decision to flip to Washington on NSD.
So yeah...I think the Dorsey recruitment hurt Michigan in several ways.

If you have the opportunity to get a player of Dorsey's caliber on campus you do it. Period.
December 19th, 2010 at 2:16 PM ^
Well, the actual results of that attempt are a pretty good argument otherwise.

Hindsight is 20/20.

Did'nt see you calling Dorsey a s/ storm when he committed, Seem to remember you defending him. How do you know what kind of a s/ storm Grimes would have been if he would have come here. Man-up and say maybe i was wrong about the situation.
December 19th, 2010 at 8:32 PM ^
What I said at the time was that if Rich Rodriguez offered a player, then he should have done his research and there should have been preliminary discussion about whether he would qualify or not. I defended Dorsey in that I thought ethics suggested that an offered scholarship should be honored by the institution.
And no matter what anyone thinks about Dorsey, it was a shitstorm.

You didn't seem to say it here:

That post was from well before it became public that Dorsey wouldn't qualify for admission. You're right that my post didn't take into account that he would be a non-qualifier, as I'm not clairvoyant. I don't see that as a fault.
December 20th, 2010 at 10:48 AM ^
The coaches aren't clairvoyant either. Obiously there was some miscommunication between the athletic department and the admissions department. Sorry, if the coaches should perceive and forestall any conceiveable obstacle to a player making the team, they're failing. This was not Rodriguez's fault entirely.
December 20th, 2010 at 11:08 AM ^
I'm not saying they're clairvoyant. But it's part of their job to recruit kids and have a grasp on their academic standing, especially when they're recruiting for a position of need (defensive back). If Demetrius Hart were a non-qualifier, well...that's not a huge deal, because we don't NEED an impact running back this year. But in 2010, we NEEDED defensive backs.
December 20th, 2010 at 2:49 PM ^
They obviously did do their due diligence, and there was a mistakle in the communication between the departments. I'm not holding that against Rodriguez, he thought Dorsey would qualify (and he did, per the NCAA) but apparently the admissions department had a problem with the program AFTER he committed and tried to enroll.
December 20th, 2010 at 3:17 PM ^
Well, I'm not sure that "obviously" belongs in that sentence anywhere. It's not obvious that they did their due diligence.
And Dorsey wasn't admitted to Louisville, either, so I wouldn't be certain that he qualified by NCAA standards.
December 20th, 2010 at 7:17 AM ^
What is a s/ storm about a kid not getting in, you can't be talking about the media scrutiny. We long ago on this board dismissed any of that. Here is your definition of a s/ storm " Hey did you here Dorsey did'nt quailify? wow that sucks". Don't know how the team got over that.
December 20th, 2010 at 8:17 AM ^
Oh, I'm sorry. I didn't realize that all media discussion should be dismissed.
I guess the whole "NCAA sanction" thing doesn't equal a shitstorm because, after all, it was discussed in the media, either. In fact, I guess the only shitstorms that can occur are ones that aren't reported.
Yep, the good ol' unreported shitstorm. Those are the worst.

might be best to consider him a problem avoided...if he wasn't cutting it there academically and/or otherwise I doubt he would at Michigan
December 19th, 2010 at 11:42 AM ^
If academics were a problem at Ole Miss then things would have been significantly problematic at Michigan. Of course, then RichRod would have been castigated for recruiting kids who aren't capable of participating academically...
Cue obligatory Ole Miss campus transportation photo...

UM has had enough with the DB injuries/transfers/non-qual/kick-off team /hit by bolt of lightning/hanging out with Jimmy Hoffa at the Red Fox. No more drama PLEASE.

A guy on the S&C staff for Ole Miss is extended family of mine, and we were bs'ing at a birthday party last night...he hopes Michigan hammers Miss St.

We aren't the only team that has attrition.
