Today's Schedule of Games

Submitted by M-Dog on October 22nd, 2022 at 10:25 AM

A well-deserved Bye week for us.  The rest of college football feels like it is taking a Bye week too, as there are not many really big games today that could go either way, like there have been the last few weeks.  Still, there are a few interesting games worth taking a look at.

Here are some highlights:

At Noon on FOX: Iowa at #2 Ohio State.  I’m not sure why, but for some reason they are letting Ohio State play on the Michigan Football Network.  So we can scout them, I guess.  Michigan beat Iowa by playing it close to the vest, not making any mistakes, and then turtling when they got a 2 score lead.  I don’t think that Ohio State has the patience to play like that, they are not built that way.  They are going to want to blast out to a 21 point lead as quickly as possible knowing that Iowa has no chance to catch up from there.  It will take longer to get that 3 score lead than Ohio State wants, but they’ll get it by the second half and that will be all she wrote.

Also at Noon on ABC: #14 Syracuse at #5 Clemson.  Is Syracuse for real?  It would be damn cool if they were, and could beat Clemson on the road to stay undefeated.  But I’m not seeing it.  Maybe if the game was at Syracuse, I could.  The Carrier Dome . . . er, JMA Wireless Dome . . . is a funky place to play.  But the game is at Death Valley and Clemson appears to have sorted itself at this point of the season.  I’d like to see a better outcome for Dino Babers, but Clemson wins big.

In the Afternoon at 3:30 PM on CBS: #7 Ole Miss at LSU.  I’ll keep a side eye on this one.  LSU is starting to show a pulse and (the other) Death Valley is a tough place to play, even during the day.  I’m going with an LSU upset in this one.

Also at 3:30 PM on FOX: #9 UCLA at #10 Oregon.  Chip Kelly takes his DTR / Zach Charbonnet show on the road for his Oregon homecoming.  Autzen Stadium under the spotlight will be a tough place to play for a UCLA team that is not used to the limelight.  But they won’t hide in the shadows and UCLA will pull off the big win.

In the Evening at 7:30 PM on ABC: Minnesota at #16 Penn State.  We get a chance to see how good (or, uh, not good) our big win over Penn State really was.  They did not look like a very good team last week, but Penn State in a White-Out night game in Happy Valley is a different critter.  Both teams have some injury questions, but it won’t matter.  Penn State will get the win.

At 8:00 PM on FS1: #17 Kansas State at #8 TCU.  I am beyond glad that we don’t have to face Adrian Martinez this year.  Because when he’s on, he’s really f . . . well, you know.  And he’s really been on this year.  Turns out that Nebraska may have had a Scott Frost problem, not an Adrian Martinez problem.  TCU, however, will have an Adrian Martinez problem, and fall short of a win.

Finally, your Pac-12 After Dark Special - meaningless crazy football just for the fun of it:

At 10:30 PM on ESPN: Washington at California.  This is a classic Pac-12 After Dark Special game, the kind of game where Cal at home at night pulls off the upset against a bewildered Washington team.  Still, I just can’t go there.  The game will be all Pac-12-After-Dark for a while, but Cal won’t have enough to close the deal.

I'll be watching Iowa-OSU for as long as that stays close, rooting for Iowa of course. Then switch over to see if Clemson is dominating Syracuse.

Afternoon will be flipping between rooting for LSU and UCLA. Would love to see a one-loss SEC champ and everyone else with at least 2.

Evening, hold my nose and root for Frames. Help our SoS. Give them some confidence for their game against mister born-on-third.

I'd like to see an undefeated UCLA and Clemson at the end of the year. That'll keep SEC teams in the playoff down to 1.

I did not highlight Texas - OK State so that the write up would not be too long-winded, but that game has the potential to be one of the best games of the day.

Texas is putting it together, and my God they have some talent on offense.  My money is on Texas in this game.

DJ Ungalalala is going to make two good plays, and a handful of decent stuff - pretty normal, actually, and he'll be hailed as some awesome #1 draft choice for the lucky NFL team.  Syracuse is going to be way overmatched against a really good Clemson team, but maaaannn are the Tigers going to be massively hyped after this win.

Iowa will make some plays against OSU, but it's not going to be a competitive game.

UCLA will be too physical for an above average, but not elite, Oregon team.  Charbonnet will continue to make everyone think he could have played in front of Corum and Haskins.  But he is REALLY GOOD!

UTenn is playing UT Martin?  In the middle of the season?  Really?  SEC scheduling is bullshit...

When you know you are automatically going to get two teams into a four-team Playoff (maybe even three teams according to some people), why would the SEC bother to schedule non-cupcakes out of conference?

We can't get to a twelve team playoff fast enough.

And it needs to have a limit on how many teams can be from one conference, so that the SEC does not just get five At Larges.
