Today's Schedule of Games

Submitted by M-Dog on December 29th, 2018 at 9:23 AM

A lot of people weren't happy about playing our bowl game on Dec 29th, but what I really like about playing it on a Saturday is that is makes today feel like a regular season football Saturday.  And that's a great thing.

College Game Day is even on.

So in the spirit of the last College Football Saturday of the season, here's today's schedule of games:

Peach Bowl  Michigan (10-2) vs. Florida (9-3)  Noon (ESPN)

Belk Bowl South Carolina (7-5) vs. Virginia (7-5)  12:30 p.m. (ABC)

Arizona Bowl  Nevada (7-5) vs. Arkansas St. (8-4)  1:15 p.m. (CBSSN)

Cotton Bowl  #2 Clemson (13-0) vs. #3 Notre Dame (12-0)  4 p.m. (ESPN)

Orange Bowl  #1 Alabama (13-0) vs. #4 Oklahoma (12-1)  8 p.m. (ESPN)

because their talking heads are guys like Pollack and Galloway. I love their game coverage, but they continue to employ morons in key talking positions because a moron who says dumb things unfortunate garners more attention (and revenue) than a knowledgeable guy

I have a similar issue - I don't think anyone is really knocking their ability to cover football live, because ESPN does it well, but it is the people that get to cover it on some crews and in the studio and so forth that bug the living shit out of me. Not everyone, but noted personalities whose hot takes become the subject of long Twitter conversations or something like that because some idiot latches onto an incomplete or factually incorrect statement.....it's irksome.

I hope OU beats Bama, and does it primarily on offense.

Send the message to our own team that you need to be able to win games with your offense too.

"Keep away" ball control is not going to cut it at the most elite level.  You're going to need points

Michigan has played in 46 bowl games. They failed to score as many as 30 points in 31 of them.

This might be entirely consistent with other major programs in their bowl games, but considering how many Michigan teams have gone into their bowl games after regular seasons with high-powered offenses, it strikes me as a notable failure.

Edit: I checked Alabama's record, and in their 68 bowls they've fallen short of 30 points 46 times, which is the same percentage—67%—as Michigan, so maybe our performance isn't an outlier.

One of my favorite Michigan victories of all time was the 1992 season Rose Bowl against Washington.

We had gotten blown out by them the year before in the 1991 season Rose Bowl on their way to the National Championship (shared with Miami).

As it got underway, the 1992 season Rose Bowl looked like it was going to be a repeat.  Washington was moving up and down the field and scoring at will.

But then something strange happened . . . we kept matching their scoring.

They would score.  Then we would come right back and match their score.  We did not go into our traditional Rose Bowl quivering shell.  We stood toe to toe and matched them punch for punch.

Michigan won the game in a shootout, in the Rose Bowl of all places.

I had never seen anything like that from Michigan at that time.

We could be playing in the final 4, if the coaching staff would have had a competent plan in Columbus...ugh

Glad Osu got left out. Otherwise we would see all the highlights of them humiliating M to get there.

if stupid Maryland completed a damn pass we might have faced a more deflated OSU team... we'll never know.

So, my sister and brother-in-law are spending the afternoon at the Belk Bowl, my son left early this morning to drive back to DC in time to watch his alma mater play ND in the first of today's college playoff games and I'm waiting for Michigan to put a winning cap on our season in Atlanta, having considered a day trip for the game. Go Blue and may we avenge yesterday's awful Purdue performance against Auburn, which was even worse than the final score.
