Think the GERG will bring stability to the DC position?

First time, long time. Can I get a double, please. [Edited because I wrote an essay last go-around, this time going for something that's slightly less mind-numbing... hopefully this doesn't result in a double post, sorry if it does] I think the hiring of Robinson is fine, I trust Rodriguez – maybe not a glamorous DC pick, but he has great experience and I think he'll get the job done. But I am more worried about his moving on too soon and continuing our instability at the DC position. Of course, how long he sticks around is dependent on maaaaaany variables, not least of which is the team's success, so I realize speculating is pretty pointless and only time will tell... and yet it's June and I'm dying for football here, so indulge me: what are your thoughts on how long he'll stick around, given a) where he is in his career, b) his past career moves, and c) how well you think he fits in here with Rodriguez and the team? Think he's still interested in going back to a head coaching jig in the near future, or coaching at the pro level, or do you think he'll stick with being a DC at the college ranks for awhile? And if the lack of stability worries me, does anyone have any insight as to whether this significantly affects recruits? Or is it pretty much a non-issue given that position coaches play a big role in recruits' decision to come to a school, and that there is frequent turnover at the coordinator position at many schools?

There was absolutely no need to reply, but I need the points. I'm saving up for a free GBMW t-shirt.

if he does a good job and works well with the staff, I wouldn't be surprised if he sticks around here for a while. His age and past HC might make this position a ceiling for him.

a) I'm pretty certain the tail end b) I think he's had a good career, lot's of posts in both College and the Pros c) Being a veteran like he is, as well as already indicating he was comfortable with the coaching staff before, I think he'll be fine. d) Good question. He has been around so he isn't afraid to up and go. I don't know the man, but if he has an ego, he might try for another HC gig. But, he is older so...good question. the rest) I think he'll be good for the team, both to add stability to the current squad as well as to lure potential recruits with his experience, especially if the unit has success next year.

As much as it would be great to see him become a Monte Kiffin type (without the baggage of a high-profile, loose cannon son), I see him being a bridge to the next DC. I think he will get the defense back on track, be here for two years, and then take one last shot at HC somewhere. No HC likes to leave on someone else's terms; I can't imagine GERG being any different in that respect.

He had very little success at the Cuse and I would have to say that I don't see anyone out there giving him another chance as HC. I think that if he is successful and RR is able to be successful the GERG will be there until he retires. He is in his mid 50's I think so I would say that will be in 5-8 years. He had the chance to go to the pros (if I remember right) but chose to come to AA. I really think that the only way he will leave is if he is unsuccessful and I don't think that will be the case. IMO

Greg Robinson is a great hire for Michigan. The man has coached with the best and had great success as a DC in the college and pro levels. My #1 concern about the defense is recruiting. Ohio State, Penn State, and Michigan State are loading up on defense. Michigan is likely to sign a good 2010 defensive class, but scholarships are getting low if we're still trying to get more offense. The defense needs more than just depth, they need difference makers, especially in the front 7.

I think the problem that some of us are seeing is that the talent UM has on defense are projects. It just seems that UM is not getting those great defensive recruits. I don't know, I could be way off base. JT Turner sure has some hype surrounding him. Same with Marvin Robinson. It just seems like, especially at LB, we don't have pure LB studs, but guys that will need a year or two to develop and learn a new position.
