TE Nauta to Announce Jan 9th

Submitted by alum96 on

4th Q of AA game.

Most believe headed to GA but at minimum it helps UM clean up its recruiting board by mid Jan and put full court press on others in final month, post dead period..  The fewer moving parts on NSD the better.

Make sure y'all tune in , especially in the 4th quarter #finaldecision pic.twitter.com/yus3soaTK6

Smart isn't necessarily bringing over the Alabama offense though - he brought in Chaney as OC, who got Hunter Henry (Arkansas' Mackey winner this year) a 37-513-2 line in 2014. The second TE on that Arkansas team, AJ Derby, had 22-303-3 one year removed from being the backup QB. That was enough to get Derby scooped up by the Patriots in the 6th round.

Sorry, but Georgia isn't a terrible dead-end destination. Hell, Vannett at OSU is probably going 4th among TEs in the draft, and that guy's career line is 54-571-6. It doesn't require a TE-centric offense to get picked up by the NFL.

No one is saying Georgia is a terrible dead-end destination... but two can play the OC used the TE before he went to the next school game:

Lane Kiffin at USC (though he was HC in these years):

2011

Xavier Grimble: 15 Rec, 144 Yds, 4 TD

Randall Telfair: 26 Rec, 273 Yds, 5 TD

2012

Xavier Grimble: 29 Rec, 316 Yds, 5 TD

Randall Telfair: 12 Rec, 100 Yds, 4 TD

2013

Xavier Grimble: 25 Rec, 271 Yds, 2 TD

Darreus Rogers: 22 Rec, 257 Yds, 0 TD

Lane Kiffin at Bama

2014

O.J. Howard: 17 Rec, 260 Yds, 0 TD

2015

O.J. Howard: 30 Rec, 335 Yds, 0 TD

So there's no guarantee that the production from the last school will translate to the next school. In this case it's even worse than it appears because O.J. Howard is on another level when compared to the USC duo.

You know, there's also the possibility that Howard just isn't that good (yet). CBS scouting report:

STRENGTHS: He is a terrific athlete for his frame with speed to run away from linebackers and the natural body control to attack the football.

WEAKNESSES: His tape is underwhelming as he doesn't properly use his size and his immature route running fails to fool defenders who can beat Howard to the catch point. He needs to embrace the physicality of the game as both a receiver and blocker to box out, utilize his length and create space.

Even with that, he's still ranked top-5 at the position for 2017. That's with Henry, Engram, and Leggett, whom are ranked 2-4, having yet to declare one way or the other for 2016.

What exactly is it you're arguing then? You've already used one strawman and now you're proving my O.J. Howard point (his top 5 rank means that scouts think he's under utilized). Most people are saying Nauta should take Harbaugh's track record with TE's into account. What is it you're arguing? Or are you just arguing for the sake of argument?

Steve Nauta played center at Michigan in the late 70s.....roomate and backup to Walt Downing, who played for 49ers and sent his son TJ to OSU.

I thought I heard Steve lived in Georgia or Florida.......the picture on Twitter looks just like Steve.   anybody know?

I hope he goes Blue but I think he wants to go to GA.  I like the announcment now so we can work on the next option.  But if he comes, here..

Oh boy!!  (Who has that GIF of Spanky saying "oh, boy?  That needs to be inserted here!)
