Stoops vs. Tressel

Submitted by El Jeffe on
I knew that Oklahoma had lost its last two BCS games (spectacularly to Boise State and crushingly to WFVU), but I didn't realize how crappy Stoops's record had been in such games until last night's broadcast. I bear nothing but ill will toward The Vest, but it seems as though Stoops has gotten much more of a pass in the national media (to say nothing of this blog, not surprisingly) than Tressel has. Is it just perennial piling on of the B10 that explains this, or the fact that OSU lost two straight championship games, or something else? Thoughts?

got buzz sawed by a WVU team that was finnaly healthy, and had a chip on their sholder, and lost to BS in one of the most exciting BCS games ever... where as OSU looked flat and ill-prepared 2 years in a row...

Overall, Stoops has done this in the BCS:
Year Bowl Oppt W/L OU Score Oppt Score
2009 MNC Florida L 14 24
2008 Fiesta West Virginia L 28 48
2007 Fiesta Boise State L 42 43
2005 MNC USC L 25 55
2004 MNC LSU L 14 21
2003 Rose Wazzou W 35 14
2001 MNC Florida State W 13 2
Meanwhile, Tressel:
Year Bowl Oppt W/L OSU Score Oppt Score
2009 Fiesta Texas L 21 24
2008 MNC LSU L 24 38
2007 MNC Florida L 14 41
2006 Fiesta Notre Dame W 34 20
2004 Fiesta Kansas St W 35 28
2003 MNC Miami (FL) W 31 24
Note: I listed the 2001 and 2003 MNC games as title games than their normal name as there wasn't a fifth game at the time.

Neither is Oaklahoma. why not the Alamo Bowl. cause tOSU is going to loose to USC, PSU and UM after Will Cambell totally pancakes Pryor causing him brain damage that causes him to believe he is the love child of Diana Ross and Richard Simmons. and I can see OU dropping a few...especially to texas!

people talk about SToopes record in bcs games ALL the time. maybe people here just dont pay attention to it, or it doesnt make the papers as much as when people talk about OSU... In big twelve country, they never talk about tressel..

Not entirely true. I'm in Texas and we do enjoy ripping on Tressel, but yes, Stoops comes up much more often. Stoops winning five Red River Rivarly games with Texas ranked in the top 11 each time solidified his name as a big time coach. I don't even think Ohio State can claim the average rank of Michigan being #8 every year. This was the first year he has lost when his team was favored as well.

I recall after last year there were numerous articles at least on espn.com (so, you know...) saying essentially "OMG!!! Can we PLEEEZ not let OSU in the Championship Game AGAIN!!! They SUUUUCK and so does the rest of the Big 10!!!!!" All this a scant 4 years after the same OSU (the U, not the players) and the same Tressel had won a championship. Maybe it was Clarett's epic flameout in the interim... Meanwhile, most of the coverage today amounts to fellating Tebow and pondering "what went wrong" for the Sooners. Even Schlabach's column (http://sports.espn.go.com/ncf/columns/story?columnist=schlabach_mark&id…) isn't particularly haranguing or hysterical, though still arguably and justifiably critical.

my understanding is that Stoops has lost 5 straight bcs games. And excellent picture of Westerberg and young Tommy Stinson of the 'Mats.

First, Bob (RIP) would drink all the Jonas' under the table and second, Bob was a much better guitarist than any of those homo Jonas losers, that is when he was sober and showed up for the gigs! Regardless, the Replacements rock, at least their earlier stuff.
