Sportsmanship and the differing cultures in sports

Submitted by Michael on
Let me begin by saying that the only organized sport I played after middle school is baseball, and that is where my passion lies. What I don't understand is the penchant that a lot of basketball players have for showboating. Obviously Blake Griffin comes to mind for reasons obvious to anyone who watched the game yesterday. (TOTAL ASSHOLE) But it's not just him - it seems like the cool thing to do is to yell at the top of your lungs after you make a dunk. Then there's the "reach in the cookie jar while heading back down the court" maneuver after someone *thinks* they've just made a good shot. Too many times they miss and they're now out of position to make a play on the rebound because of their premature celebration of themselves. I don't notice this much from our guys. Indeed, Manny and DeShawn appear to be pretty humble on the floor, not seeking much attention. In fact, I don't think any of our players really do all that stuff, but I could be wrong. Maybe it's the baseball player in me who knows that, in baseball at least, showboating is the quickest way to find a fastball heading straight at your head. On top of that, your teammates will tell you to STFU and play the game. I guess the whole point of this post is to see what you all think. I am just too old school? I've been interested in the different sport cultures, especially because I never played basketball, soccer, or football after middle school. P.S. If you're going to argue about how awesome it is to be a douchebag like Blake Griffin, we're obviously not ever going to agree, so go ahead and save your breath.

I don't mind when players celebrate with their team, like what Michigan traditionally does after a TD, but Griffin looking at his biceps and flexing is a little much. I imagine he's in for some humble pie when he enters the NBA.

I thought for sure this was going to be some poorly camouflaged racism about how white people don't celebrate. I'm glad it wasn't. Backing your point, the announcers speculated Blake hurt his wrist while dunking, that made me smile.

Sort of a tangent, but I wish the MLB hadn't gone so crazy with 'warning both dugouts' every time someone loses the handle on a fastball that ends up in the batters' box. Unlike in basketball (where apparently your only recourse against the likes of Griffin is to flip him over yourself onto his tailbone), baseball was sort of self-adjudicating. You pose during a bomb, you get the next one on your hip. Take too long of a look back at the umpire, you get rung up on a ball above the letters, etc.

Manny spread his wings and flew down the court (Duke game?) and I thought it was awesome. This stuff happens. I didn't see Griffin do anything I would consider excessive. It's part of the games now unless leagues/associations start to take a hard line against it. I think it just bothers everyone more because of the outcome of the game. And if we're going to judge Blake Griffin because of the flexing in the game yesterday, I'm also going to judge him on his other actions. He calmed his brother down at an important time in the game, showing leadership skills. He didn't say much after coming up bloody from a number of shots to his body. At one point, a little ball boy ran out and cleaned the floor and you could hear him say "thanks little buddy" as he patted the kid on the back. He beat us, he was better than any player we've had at Michigan in a looong time. Just be happy we got the opportunity to play him.
