Sorry to re-post: CHICAGO fans, Newport Bar & Grill
thread got buried and I wanted to address a couple questions people had about the crowd/atmosphere there.
I went for the WMU game...met up with a fellow mgoblogger.
much smaller place than Duffy's. was full of michigan fans, but full meant about 40-50 people. we sat at the corner of the bar and chatted it up with a few other fans. food was great.
atmosphere was great...not crazy at all, but everyone went crazy for big plays/td's and the like. good balance of hearing the announcers or the person you're talking to and high fiving strangers on big plays. tables were available until about 30 minutes before the game, not sure if it has gotten anymore crowded since week 1.
treetopflyer - i would take your gf here for a game, then duffy's for msu/psu/or osu. Duffy's is kind of the student section to Newport's other side of the stadium.
i plan on getting up there at 10:15ish this saturday...will be at the SE corner of the bar in a tigers hat...if peeps are up for it, i can get a table as well.
go blue!

I love the comparison of bars to sections of the Stadium. I'm usually at Duffy's but ventured to Mad River for the Notre Dame game and was pleasantly surprised with the atmosphere. It's definitely changed since a couple years ago, it was packed with Maize and Blue fans and got pretty loud...GO BLUE!!!

that Newport bar and grill was a Michigan bar. Went there often to watch various games (in a low key manner). Not necessarily Michigan games. They were one of the few places in that area that had the Hockey ticket.
Good food. Don't live in Chicago any more (lived in the southport area from 2000-2006), but this bar was one of the few in the area that wasn't trendy. Stuck to good food, ability to do laundry, good beer specials, but not known for a place to be classified as a 'insert favorite sports team' bar..

my understanding is it's new this year for UM games, former Take Five crowd?

Duffy's as a student section is a great description. Part of the plan is to introduce not only to M football and fans, and she wants to understand the game. sounds like i'll be able to actually hold a conversation.
Many thanks.

Is probably the worst place I've ever watched any sporting event ever. And since I went to cheer on Michigan, that made it even worse. They blare club music during all of the commercials and the emcee's are flat out awful. Basically it is the student section if they area you sat was loaded with typical frat kids. I guess I've only been there once (it was that bad that I refuse to go again) so maybe I had a bad emcee. The story:
The emcee was having drinks ordered for him by one of the tables near his booth - up where the band plays when Duffy's has live music. When one of the drink's was placed in front of him, he proceeded to announce over the PA that, "you guys have to stop buying me drinks because this is how I ended up with a kid." Never again.

that describes most every bar in Lincoln Park. At least on a CFB Saturday.

My understanding is that's true. Mad River is more low key, but I wish Take 5 hadn't gone out of business. Southport is my favorite bar area, mostly because it's more low key but also the typical clientele is closer to my age (over 25) whereas Clark is mostly younger. Take 5 had good food, good price on beer, and was nice and quiet except for during big plays (i.e. no obnoxious music).
