Softball hits two grand slams in 12-4 win over Indiana

Submitted by Wolverine Devotee on

After Hutch became the winningest coach in the history of the sport yesterday and the celebrations that took place, I was wondering if the team would come out as sharp as they had the last two games today.

#2 Michigan and Indiana traded runs for the first three innings, going back and forth.

Michigan was up 3-2 once the 4th inning started via RBIs by Blanco and Vargas and a HR by Sobczak.

Romero hit a leadoff home run to put Michigan up 4-2, and then one of the hottest hitters on this team right now in Lindsay Montemarano hit a grand slam in that same inning (the first of her career).

That essentially ended any hopes Indiana had of hanging around with Michigan as the Wolverines led 8-2 after the 4th.

Sara Driesenga settled in, going 1-2-3 the next inning and then once the 6th approached, it was time for more fun.

Sierra Lawrence, who was 0-for-3 prior to this AB, hit a grand slam of her own, the 3rd of her career. Michigan hits two grand slams in a game for the first time since 5/5/2010 against EMU when Maggie Viefhaus and Dorian Shaw did so.

With Michigan up 12-2, Indiana tacked on a couple runs to try to extend the game, but a pop-out ended the game in 6.

Michigan wins 12-4 in 6 innings. They sweep Indiana, moving to 27-3 and 5-1 in the B1G. The Wolverines outscored the Hoosiers 31-7 this weekend.

Michigan will head to Nebraska next weekend.

Nebraska is 3-3 in the B1G. They dropped two to Illinois last weekend and inexplicably lost to Maryland yesterday, 7-4.

Maryland is hot garbage. How do I know this?

Well, besides their 8-25 record and 1-5 conference mark, Nebraska turned around and beat Maryland 26-4 today.

Great to see that the team didn't have a let down after yesterdays celebration.  With Florida losing 2 out of 3 against Alabama, good chance Michigan moves to No. 1 in the rankings.

Northwestern run rules Minnesota 10-2. Wow. So Michigan and Minnesota have the same conference record. PSU is 6-0 but they're bad and beat terrible RU and MSU so that won't last long.

Betsa's control problems stand out the most.

This will be the difference in the College Softball World Series, this year.

On a side note, UM has scored 286 runs in 31 games - Florida 224 runs in 37 games. Advantage UM on offense.

This is true, obviously, but I think you have to prepare for the story playing out the way it should (as it did last year).  The control problems continue to plague us against teams other than Florida and have come back to haunt us twice already.  The lines from the losses show that neither Washington nor Northwestern actually beat us.  We gave those games to them with walks and poor defense.  The defense seems to have stiffened up quite a bit but the walks are still clearly an issue.

It's definitely time to start talking about Monte very seriously as a break-out player of the year.  Before the season, I ID'ed her as someone who's spot in the line-up was under serious threat, and for the first month or more of the year, she wasn't even sniffing a .200 batting average.  Now she's hitting well over .300 (even with the abysmal start factored in) and has 8 long balls.  She reaches base nearly every other time she steps to the plate.  I don't know if her current hot streak is sustainable, but if she can maintain even some of the mojo, that's a huge boon to this team.
