Softball Bludgeoning OSU Again

Submitted by South Bend Wolverine on

The softball team is at it again, beating OSU's faces into the ground.  The Wolverines lead 9-0 in the top of the 4th on the strength of 5 hits, including long balls from Sierra Romero, Kelsey Susalla, and Amanda Vargas, who chipped in with her first career grand slam!  OSU will need to plate some runs in the next couple frames if they want to avoid an early ending.

Make that 12-0, as Sierra Lawrence knocks one out as well.  One of the things I've been really impressed with, especially in recent weeks, is the power hitting this Michigan team has.  Last year, with the sppedy combo of Doyle & Sappingfield leading off, and then no one throwing to Romero, we did a little more of the short stuff it seems like.  This year, though, we are crushing homers at an impressive rate - coming into the weekend, we were #5 in the nations in HRs per game, and we've hit 8 more already this weekend.  That we're doing this while also remaining one of the top 15 teams in on-base is just crazy.

I'm noticing more & more that, when we start to bring in the subs, Romero is often the first to go to the bench.  I guess this makes sense insofar as letting her swing away against already-beaten teams is kinda harsh; I suspect it also has to do with preserving her arm as much as possible.  No point in aggravating your best player's injury when the game is already in hand.

Someone tweeted at OSU softball yesterday:

Pretty funny as it did go to 13-1 again today. Of course, OSU's account stopped updating the score after it went 3-0.
