I will be in Oscoda, on the mouth of the Au Sable river. Probably will anchor the father inlaws boat out in on Lake Huron and sleep off shore. I'll be Doing some fishing, jet skiing , wake boarding, spending time with the inlaws, BBQ'n and teaching my 19 week old Rottweiler Hendrix how to swim and what it's like to be a lake dog! What are your plans? Be safe, don't lose any fingers with the fireworks, enjoy your time with family, wether across Michigan is looking beautiful this weekend. And as always, God Bless America and the Univeristy of Michigan. GO red, white and most importantly BLUE! Sorry for the format. iPhone post. :/

Last year my uncle, who is a very intelligent engineer for a major company, blew up a section of our dock because he didn't understand the fireworks we had and set his up wrong when he went to fire one off. Two cousins under the age of 16 had already successfully fired them off....

So we can only hope this year is as fun as last. Enjoy your weekend, fellow Pyrotechnician

Going to a friends house for a BBQ which I have agreed to provide the meat. I want to smoke a brisket but it is something I have never attempted before due to cost if said brisket. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. I use an electric smoker and prefer apple or pecan wood chips and always run the temp at 225.

Oh man ... You check out the Franklin BBQ method. You get a 10 lb packers cut, light rub, hickory chips, apple cider in the liquid tray. Run it at 270 which produced good caramelization. After 5 hours, before you hit the stall, spray apple cider on it a couple times to check the bark - make sure there is no soot on there. Once it is dark brown wrap it in butcher paper to seal the juices. Continue with the high temp to power on through the stall. Pull at 200 min. Best brisket you will EVER have - tender and juicy inside with an awesome bark.

It has both the flat (what you normally see as corned beef brisket) and the point (a little fattier) still connected.  It is harder to cook than just the flat because of the two different sections.  If this is your first one, I would do a flat (you can find them from 6-9 lbs).  I do 225 for about an hour to an hour and a quarter a pound, and shoot for an internal temp of 205.  It is "cooked" well before then, but the 205 temp breaks down the collagen and makes it tender.

Not a brisket, but I'll be smoking a Boston Butt to make pulled pork sandwiches. I use the recipe on mmmgoblubbq.com, the guy who does the tailgating recipes on the front page here during football season. I've done it twice before and it has turned out great both times.

on the Virtual Weber Bullet (www.virtualweberbullet.com) is a good one.  Start it the evening before you plan to eat (maybe 10 pm) smoke it all night and by 2 or 3 PM it'll be ready to go for dinner.  Wrap it in foil, put it in a cooler, and try to resist digging in early.

I've often thought we could have a recurring smoker/BBQ thread on the board--especially during FB season.  The weekly recipes have been a good addition (really good, actually), but always seems like there's a lot more that can be said.

I agree about the BBQ threads (though we've kinda had them before).  No reason we can't turn our weekly BBQ tailgate threads into a general BBQ thread.  I follow Joe on twitter, the guy from mmmgoblubbq, and he posts and retweets some good stuff, plus if you tweet at him with questions, as I do since I'm a somewhat experiences but not super experienced BBQer, he's always really good about getting back to you.

I'll be arriving at DTW from Seattle on Friday, driving up to Saginaw to drop off my daughter with her grandparents, then driving back to DTW on Sunday to depart for Portugal. So, "traveling" is gonna have to be my answer here. But hopefully we can get some fireworks in on Saturday.

I moved to DC this year, so the family and I will brave the masses and head to to National Mall to see the fireworks from the Lincoln Memorial while listening to the 1812 Overture being played live. 'Merica!
