Snap Count Depth Chart - Maryland
Apparently Michigan was planning on a blowout because all of the 3rd, 4th, and 5th stringers travelled this week.
Offense:
- Filiaga got the start at LG this week. Keegan came in after the first couple of drives and played the rest of the way until back-up time.
- McCarthy did not get many snaps given the type of game. Part of that was getting Villari and Bowman more than 1-2 snaps.
- Trente Jones primarily got his snaps as the back-up RT vs. his 6th O-lineman role.
- The TE rotation was small compared to previous blow-outs. It was also the lowest TE/snap ration of the season at 1.35.
- Congrats to Will Rolapp for not just making the depth chart but for making a catch.
- George Johnson was wearing #17 and came in as a receiver. Previously he was on defense.
Defense:
- Concerned Brad Hawkins left for an injury and not just to save snaps. After the first 5 plays, the basic safety combo was Moore & Moten.
- No Mullings at LB or Upshaw at DE/DT despite snaps to be had. Might be an injury watch situation or...they knew they would win big and wanted to get some guys snaps and the travel team is a limited roster.
- TJ Guy played in his first game and got one sack. EXPECT BIG THINGS!
The chart:
Freshman:
- Greg Crippen played in his 5 game. The redshirt is burned
- Previously mentioned, TJ Guy gets in his first game
- Ja'Den McBurrows did not play, thus keeping the redshirt an option

Brad hawkins had 5 snaps?

Yes, as was pointed out several times, he got hurt

Hawkins came back out for 2nd half workouts during the Maryland game so maybe he will be ok.

How significant was Brad Hawkins' injury?
“I don’t think it’s gonna be. I know what happened, and I don’t think it’s significant. But, I don’t know for sure.”

I'd guess he's probable. My initial concern would have been concussion, but then he wouldn't have come back out for workouts if that were the case.

It's Ohio fergodsakes, he'll play.

Zack Shaw on 24/7 posted that Upshaw was absent from warm ups for Maryland. I don't know if he travelled or not, but I would assume this is injury related as he has been in and out due to injury a few times this year.

He did not make the trip and Harbaugh suggested that it was injury related.
Why didn't Taylor Upshaw travel?
“He’s working through something.”

I always find away games entertaining when you look at who has to play on special teams. Upshaw is on kickoff coverage. Jones is on kick return. The limited roster makes for some occasional weird deployments on ST where you get to see a very large human trying to sprint 30-60 yards downfield to make a tackle or a block.

Nitpicking, but TJ Guy did see the field some at DE against Northern Illinois.

Burning Crippens redshirt seems unnecessary… hopefully he goes 1st/2nd round in 4 years
November 22nd, 2021 at 4:55 PM ^
Redshirts don't really matter if you recruit well. Elite teams pretty rarely have 5th year guys starting unless its because of injury. If you think he will be in the 2 deep next year you play him this year

He must be the heir apparent at center and they must want him to have a decent amount of actual game experience. Can't explain it any other way ...

I hate to say it but Moore & Moten may be the best Safety combo to use against osu (assuming Dax is at Nickel most of the time, obv).
I just don't know if Hawkins can cut it in coverage against those receivers.

I was thinking the same thing. They are quicker and more athletic. Moore is always around the ball.
Hate to underestimate that experience though.
I like our D backfield next year with Moore, Moten, and DJ along with Vince and Gemon.

Hawkins is not athletic enough to hang with elite level talent like OSU has. Either is Ross. But I don't know what can be done about this now.

Loved seeing TJ Guy get his first sack and the emotions that came with it. Also, it's been fun watching Rod Moore get some PT in the last few weeks. For a freshman he seems to get in on a lot of run plays, and I feel like we haven't heard about him much in the passing game (which obviously is what you want).
Some really talented young guys on this team besides the ones we're always hearing about (JJ, DE, AA, JC)

Whenever I see acronyms and other abbreviations of players’ names on MGoBlog, I think of the rosters for Key & Peele’s Annual East/West Collegiate Bowl Game.
JJ - JayKwellin Jinglesplotch, Louisiana Tech University
DE - Deliriousness Ecstasy, University of Wollongong, Australia
AA - AyAyRon Ampersandia, University of Phoenix
JC - Jimmy CrackKorn, University of South Carolina

Maryland had a couple of times guys were running free in the secondary. Two plays in a row when Tagovialoa missed a guy wide open in the end zone. I’m curious to see who gets dinged for that in UFR.

Crippen won’t play at the college level for 5 years so his redshirt is irrelevant.
We basically got one year from Ojabo. R/S, 2020 COVID, then this year. On paper he’s a redshirt freshman?
November 22nd, 2021 at 7:38 PM ^
JJ produced 2 TD's in 8 snaps.....we might need that kind of production to keep pace with OSU.

I agree. Touchdown every 4 snaps should ensure victory
