Should Pep Hamilton be Fired?

Submitted by SkyPanther on

The passing game looked better before Pep Hamilton was hired.

In not one game since he was hired has the passing game looked good.

People complained about Tim Drevo last year. But he was coaching the O Line when Jedd Fisch was here. The offense looked better back then.

It is true, the O Line made some serious mistakes. And Ed Warinner, I am sure, will work on the line to improve it.

But I still ask, in what game has the passing game look since Pep Hamilton was hired as passing game coordinator?

This is a garbage take that discredits anyone who holds it.

Pep did not recruit or coach the tackles. And they were the problem, full stop. There is simply no way to analyze his work on Harbaugh’s offense (he’s the OC, after all, it’s his game plan) after tonight’s game.

People who are angry at Pep are literally just demonstrating that they don’t know what they’re watching.

Exactly this. The passing game looked fine to me. Receivers were open, Patterson generally put the ball in target, and the receivers did a great job making catches.

If the complaint is that nearly everything was within 5 yards of the los...well, to me that's a direct reflection of the state of the offensive line, recognizing they are not capable of protecting the QB for anything more complex. To me, the passing game was structured to do the best possible given the crap nature of the line.

Receivers were open? Pep Hamilton doesn't coach the receivers.

Fire Pep Hamilton and give Jim McElwain his duties. You will see an immediate improvement in the passing game.

Pep Hamilton has nothing on his resume. Jim McElwain has National Championships on his.

What point are you trying to make? I've seen nothing but vague, blanket generalizations so far.

I'm saying I saw all the components for a functional passing game, including a reasonable plan to mitigate a crap offensive line. What more do you want from a passing game coordinator?

Do you think the WR coaches are working in isolation from the rest of the offense? Particularly the passing game coordinator? Yes, the WR coaches should be recognized for a good performance from the wide receivers. But shouldn't the passing game coordinator also take part in that praise? I don't see how you can separate those things, and yet somehow Pep is getting singled out for criticism.

Did Moorhead recruit the tackles at Penn State?  Even with a bad offensive line, Moorhead turned around that offense quickly.  Our passing offense has regressed significantly from the Jedd Fisch years.  When we talk about Don Brown, we point to his years at BC, UConn, etc., when assessing him.  Yes, we cannot make a definitive judgment based on one year and one game, but can you point to the Cleveland Brown or Colts or Howard offenses to bolster this $1MM/year passing coordinator?  In the 5 Questions about Offense piece today, our $1MM passing coordinator was not even mentioned.  We think Warinner, Drevno, and Frey can affect the offense, but our passing coordinator cannot?  (UCLA's passing offense last year with Fisch improved significantly, by the way.)  We do not have an OC.  Regardless of the tackle situation, if you think the absence of a real OC (and a $1MM passing coordinator who disclaims any responsibility for the offense) is meaningless, let me simply say that I strongly disagree.  I won't follow your lead by simply calling your "take" a foul name.  That's not an argument.  It's just an unreasoned attack.

We threw for 4 times more yards than we rushed for tonight.

The offensive woes rest squarely on the shoulders of Harbaugh. He calls plays, he designs the offense.

No scape goats this year.

He doesn’t run the offense or call plays this year. From what they said before Jim is back on that this year.

Yep, Pep Hamilton is f-ing hot garbage.  Same shit from last year.  Drevno was only half the issue.  Playing call still stinks.

Ask Brian he deleted my thread.  Ole Miss would have scored 28+ on offense in this game.  We have made Patterson impotent.

No he shouldn't be.  2nd and goal from the 2, they tried to get aggressive, and got smoked.  The tackles can't do enough to have an aggressive game plan against a good defense.  Until that changes this will look a lot like last year.

I give the whole team credit for not giving up under brutal circumstances.

Yes. You can jsut blame Harbaugh, there was a lot of evident that shows Pep was a bad OC or bad passing game coordinator. Did you see any game Harbaugh prasing Pep as he did on Jeb Fisch? No.

Just look at the red zone offense and creativity ont he passing game design/ It's very sub bar and predictable. Don't give me crap about Harbaugh is the OC. He's not, the OC offer play for him toe select. It's clear that Harbaugh didn't have too many good play to select.

It's frustrating teams like Utah State and App state look better than us on O and in passing.  No way they are more talented than us.  It comes down to playcalling.  Something is really broken.  Maybe Harbaugh needs to hire a superb O coordinator and not be the one calling plays.

Exactly.  What Harbaugh did with Don Brown (hire a great college DC), Franklin did with Moorhead (hire a great college OC), is what we are asking for.  We do not even have an OC this year.  Harbaugh has enough on his plate.  We hired the Cleveland Browns' OC as our passing coordinator, and we are surprised when our college passing offense does not succeed.  What did we expect?
