Shaquelle Evans to ND

Submitted by Magnus on
This isn't a huge surprise, but Shaquelle Evans committed to Notre Dame.  I can't help but think that if Threet had any accuracy and/or time to throw the ball, McNeal would still be committed and Evans would have given Michigan a longer look.  Instead, he's off to Notre Dame so Charlie Weis can coach him poorly.

of their players now are going to be around for the next year or two. Add the new good class and we're in for a better ND team, no matter what kind of a coach Weiss is (and I don't think he is as bad as most people on this board write).

In 2007 Weis went 3-9 in his third year as coach of Notre Dame.  In 2008 - his fourth year as coach - he's 5-3 without winning a single game against a quality opponent, unless you count SDSU, Michigan, Purdue, Stanford, or Washington as quality opponeents.  Also, he lost to Wannstache.

That's not the reason that McNeal decomitted. When these kids say that losing doesn't affect them that much, they're being pretty honest. It is a better argument to say we're winning now, but they know better in most cases. The better ones look at the type of offense/defense that is run, and figure out if that fits their play, and what kind of player they are. Threets suckitude had nothing to do with it.

I didn't say the losing had anything to do with it.  I said the fact that Threet sucks probably factored in.  If we can't complete any passes and our leading outside receiver is catching only 2 or 3 passes a game, that can't bode well for incoming recruits.  McNeal would either have to put up with Threet or work with other young QB's who might struggle just as much.  If he's looking at catching PASSES from Adam Weber or catching A PASS from Steve Threet - and he has no vested interest either way - maybe Minnesota is the best choice.

That's the part I was responding to.  I never said losing had anything to do with decommitments; otherwise, Notre Dame wouldn't be getting recruits after last year.  In many ways, the offensive system and Threet's performance are one and the same.  This offense is such that it could be wildly successful in the passing game.  As it is, we're relying solely on the running game mixed with an occasional bubble screen or slant.  The offensive system is nothing without the players to run it.  Threet is wildly inaccurate, and help is coming in the way of 18-year-olds.  Whatever he says, I'm saying McNeal might have been turned off by Threet's inaccuracy.

I see what you're saying. My last response wasn't as thorough, I apologize. The recruits, especially in our situation, don't look at how bad our QB's are, unless we have no reasonable replacement, or plan to change. In this specific situation, with McNeal, he has developed a relationship with Shavodrick Beaver, and previously with Newsome. They talk a lot, and talk about Beaver being his QB, and vice versa. So, to answer your question, Threet, and the other QB's have something to do with our losing. These recruits will look at the whole situation, and evaluate it though. If he thought he was going to have 4 years of Threet as his QB, then yes I would side with you. They all know we're transitioning though, and have good quarterback's coming in.

I don't think the offensive system and Threet's performance are one in the same. Yes, Michigan is limited in what it can do, but Rich Rod has coached awhile now, at a couple different schools. They have plenty of resources to look at his previous style and scheme. In this specific case, Bryce McNeal wants to play on the outside, and doesn't think he fits in to how we will look when he's there. Whether he's right or not, doesn't matter, it's how he feels, and if he's not comfortable now, I'd rather not lose him later.

who cares we all saw this coming. ND has some good young receivers in Tate and Floyd. I think Michael Floyd in particular will be a stud. anyway, notre dame is still as lame as ever. i'm confident RR can do more with less talent.

no, richrod will have boatlaods of talent (he already does albeit being very young). so although i'm now numb due to a 2-7 record, i am hopelessly optimistic about the future. we'll be straight, i'm not worried about it.

I still think Shaq would've committed had we proven we'd pass more than past Richrod offenses. Unfortunately Threet and Sheridan don't have the arm to do so. We'll get those guys, it'll just take one to have faith and be a stud.

As for Shaq going to ND, Weis has nevere been a head coach ANYWHERE on any level before ND.  He won't make it as a head coach.  Shaq is wasting his talent if he wants to go to the league.  BUT- Look out if they hire Brian Kelly in 2 years.
