Beaver's decommitment is obviously not a good thing. But I think most of us (or at least I) expected Forcier to be the frontrunner for the job along with Threet. So while I'll miss the athleticism that Beaver could have brought to the table, I'm not sure we would have seen it very much except in spot duty or if someone got injured.

Where this hurts is depth. At the beginning of the year we would have all agreed that this class needs to have 2 quarterbacks; that is now looking doubtful. If we can find another QB before signing day then I won't care about someone who spurned us for Tulsa. But I'm with you, I've been favoring Forcier to be the frontrunner to challenge Threet.

It might not be a bad idea to pursue ATH types, guys who could come in and offer depth at QB but could mainly play somewhere else (Travante Stallworth, Denard Robinson, Justin Siller...).

I would. Gallon is not going to be a QB. He might take some direct snaps. He might even throw the ball on occasion, if Rodriguez feels a little frisky. But a viable #2? Nope. Gallon didn't run anything close to a spread offense in high school. He didn't sit back in the pocket and throw the ball. He spun around, faked a couple times, and then tossed a pass to a pre-determined receiver. If Rodriguez isn't going to make Feagin a viable #2 - or even a viable #3 - Gallon isn't going to be one, either.

"He spun around, faked a couple times, and then tossed a pass to a pre-determined receiver." You could be describing 99% of Pat White's play-calling with this sentence. And how can you downplay what Gallon is doing right now in Florida in the QB position? Feagin never had those kinds of numbers. Four plays: QB keeper from the shot-gun, a bubble-screen to Odoms, an option pitch to Shaw/Minor/Fitz, or a zone-read to Mathews/Shaw. I feel like speculation on Gallon, even with his height, establishes him as an athlete closer to Pat White's caliber than Feagin ever was.

I guess it depends on if you're talking about a viable #2 on a team with Threet and Forcier (and Feagin and Sheridan and Cone, to a lesser extent), or simply a viable #2 in the generic spread option, a guy who probably wouldn't be a starter but could still make a few plays. Because there's no way he could beat out Threet or Forcier, in my opinion.
