Scout v Rivals Re: Will Campbell

Submitted by Thrillhouse on
The two pay sites are taking markedly different stances on Will Campbell's decommit. Rivals has removed him from the commit list while Scout still has him listed as a commit and even had a story up yesterday saying that this is not similar to the Kevin Newsome situation. Can anyone with a little more insight enlighten me as to why Scout seems so much more optimistic about the whole thing?

You'll find out 2nd week in February.  Until then don't bother unless you can personally affect the situation.

MI DT William Campbell. If he doesn't end up back with Michigan, it will hurt. I think his status hasn't changed too much. Wasn't he always planning on taking 5 visits? Sounds like a little sensationalism from Rivals.

FWIW, the Rivals recruiting guy said on their boards that he still expects Campbell to come. Campbell had been wanting to take visits since forever, and our staff seems to have a staunch "If you're committed, you don't take visits, if you want to to take visit, we reserve the right to offer your scholarship to someone else," stance. So, Campbell still wants to take visits. So he rescinded. Rivals thinks that virtually nothing has changed in his mind since 12 months ago.

Well,

According to Tom Markowski, Michigan State is now a legitimate player for William Campbell. Seriously, anybody that thinks this is something to just blow off is sorely mistaken. There was an article a couple of weeks ago that said Teric Jones originally wanted to go to MSU, but, was never offered a scholarship because Baker and Caper had already committed to them. As much as I hate to admit it, I'm extremely impressed with how quickly Mark Dantonio has been able to repair and build relationships with the high school coaches in state and undo the damage that John L. Smith had caused with them. Its great to chase after the 4 and 5 star kids from the south, but, its not worth it if you swing and miss on those recruits and damage your credibility with recruits in the midwest.

Well yeah, before Michigan wasn't even a possibility.  I don't think he still wants to go to MSU.  Also, who is Tom Markowski?  If it's the MSU Rivals guy, then I put 0 credence in it.  Once again, MSU schills make money saying "Wait til next year".

...is literally the only place I've seen Campbell and MSU mentioned in the same breath.  Will has been hinting at trips to USC, Miami and LSU for months, so it's not surprising that those are the schools he's primarily interested in.

In short, I am faaaaaaaaaaaaaar more likely to believe a guy like Sam Webb, who's covered recruiting for years, than Markowski, who covers HS sports but not recruiting per se.

The Scout board is hinting at a team that Campbell is interested in that previously wasn't in the running. LSU, Miami and USC are givens. Michigan State is the other team. What is becoming clear is that Rich Rod and his staff aren't exactly endearing themselves to the in state high school coaches. The Marcus Witherspoon debacle isn't helping out the negative perception of Rich Rod that has been created in the eyes of potential recruits by the media and other coaches around the nation.

I still believe, based on all available information, that U-M leads with USC, Miami and LSU somewhat below that and possibly MSU well below that.  He texted Webb with, "I'll probably end up at Michigan."  Things obviously change, but I don't see any evidence here of Sparty's return to recruiting glory.

I will see even less evidence when they're skunked on Gardner, Jackson, White and Bolden next year.  Just my opinion.

I just received this e-mail from GoBlueWolverine (Michigan Scout.com site):

"And little semi-super Cass Tech Jr. CB Dior Mathis has been convinced by his teammates NOT to pull the Miami-trigger ... those teammates: commit Teric Jones, Thomas Gordon, recent-decommit/future-recommit Will Campbell."

Emphasis mine. Sounds like they're pretty certain he'll end up in Maize & Blue.
