Scariest defensive stat of all time (plays over 50+ yards given up)
Pulled this for Rival poster, I knew it was bad but how inferior can we be on D over this long a period, what is going on?

sorry about that, this is plays that the D gave up that were greater then 50+ yards for OSU, Michigan and PSU...see how we rank compared to our competition.

we managed to beat PSU all those years, we really were (i think still are) in their heads. gotta cut down on those big plays though.

sucks!

I don't know if I believe those numbers (for OSU and PSU). Did they provide a source?

That's an absurdly small sample size. Show us the entire Big Ten, or other teams of equal caliber. I'm sure our stats aren't atypical.

i doubt very much that you're looking at an accident. and why would you be sure that our stats aren't atypical? casual observation of mgoblog memes suggest you're wrong, for example.

50+ yards is a pretty arbitrary measure. i'd wager that at least 1/4 of all plays can't go 50 yards, just as a matter of the amount of field remaining. any measure that ignores that number of plays isn't going to be super thorough, but this was kind of more illustrative than especially quantitative anyway. the whole thing is an indictment of our safety play.

I'm sure our numbers for this year are atypically high. I've never seen a team give up big plays in the same volume we have.

Is that it would be even more lopsided on plays of 40+ yds. This year alone we must have had an extra 6-8 plays in the 40-49 yd range. This is where saftey play is so vital. It is nearly impossible to break a long run against a team w/ good safeties.
November 24th, 2008 at 3:57 PM ^
Which makes me think these numbers might not be accurate... They gave up ZERO plays of 50 or more yards when they were 4-7...
And only 1 in 2003 when they were 3-9!
Those were some great D's on some awful teams!
November 24th, 2008 at 4:02 PM ^
I took them at face value. I can think of at least 8 off the top of my head against MSU, PSU and OSU.

osu gave up an 80 yard run to illinois last year, so those stats are wrong
November 24th, 2008 at 5:29 PM ^
so we got the highest score. we won?

PSU had 3 (2 rush, 1 pass) in '07, OSU had 2 in '07 w/ a much acclaimed D; regardless, if you throw out this year for UM and add in a few missed stats for the others, the numbers even out much more; AND the D staff responsible for the previous years is gone now so maybe moot?
